  1. Ok...crazy day! Graduation. Quick fish update..she seems to be responding well to the Prazi. I saw her open both gills wide today for the first time in a long time. We have been getting some food down her too. She kind of opened and closed her mouth with the syringe in it...not super improvement, but something.
  2. Yay for being done with it! I hope the Prazi helps her...we think she may be "passing out" every now and then, but she might be sleeping too. Not sure. I'll post an update tomorrow.
  3. Should we add salt, prime (double), and cycle too?
  4. Ok. What do I do to add the Prazi? Should we do a water change first? I have PraziPro. She is really struggling to breathe too it seems. Is this due to her inability to open her mouth? We did get some more fry food down her just now, so thankfully she is "eating" a little. Tank parameters tonight: Temp: 74F pH: 7.4 Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrites: 0 ppm Nitrates: 0 ppm
  5. Ok. We got her to eat a little this morning. We have some tweezers that are thinner we forgot we had, so we used those and were able to open her mouth and get some liquid fry food in. She is still acting a little off, but much better than yesterday. I am hoping we can bring her back from the brink! We'll see. She does seem to be rubbing against things in her tank if that is helpful information...plants and such. I'll make sure the water stays clean.
  6. Quick update...boyfriend did a 40% water change and tried to hand feed her some of the fry food again (which we haven't tried for a while). He said she seemed worse for a few minutes. He checked on her a few hours ago and she was swimming around pretty normally. I'm not sure what to think about that and I guess I won't get my hopes up too high, but maybe she was just upset by our being gone for a couple days (light being off the whole time, etc). Should we attempt to treat with the Prazi or wait and see if she improves first?
  7. Is there anything I can do to help her? Or make it more comfortable? She goes through periods where she is like that and then seems fine for a minute afterward. I think she is giving up slowly though...
  8. Ok. She did not open her mouth at all when we lifted her out of the water. She is floating strangely around the tank too...almost like she isn't swimming but letting the current take her and floating up to the top. She is also having trouble staying upright. Do you think there is anything we can do? My boyfriend thinks she is dying. She didn't eat anything we put in last night either.
  9. I will try that in the morning. Is there anything we can do if that has happened? (When we were trying to hand feed her and bring her mouth out of the water, she wasn't opening her mouth then. She may have been scared. She is much more comfortable being "held" now, so maybe it will work tomorrow.)
  10. We just got home and I checked the water first thing. Results: Temp: 75F pH: 7.4 Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrites: 0ppm Nitrates: 10 ppm She is swimming around and seems happy, but we put food in and she didn't go for it like usual. She also seems to be "breathing heavily" if that makes sense, through her gills. It looked to me like she tried to open her mouth (it didn't open), but her gills and the area under her mouth expanded a bit. Maybe I can get a video of it tomorrow. I am really worried she can no longer open her mouth. Is that a possible sign of flukes? I am going to watch her and see if she eats anything and then get some sleep. I'll post again tomorrow though. It seems like the cycle is holding a bit better at least!
  11. Hopefully the water being better will help with that. I just hope it doesn't do anything crazy while we're gone! We are going to do a 100% change in the morning with double Prime.
  12. Oh...and sorry...we do have a lot of bubbles and surface aeration...we have the same amount we have always had. There is the filter and the bubble/light on the other side of the tank. She isn't gasping for air at the surface, just hanging out up there.
  13. It probably is flukes or at least irritation...one of her gills looks shiny on the outside to me now and a bit red on the inside. The other one doesn't open as wide as I think it should. I feel so bad for her and I wish I could do the medicine sooner. Hopefully she will be ok until Tuesday evening and then we can treat the flukes if that is what it is. She does seem happier with the "weekend feeder" thing out of the tank. I think her mouth is irritating her though because she isn't going after the food like usual.
  14. Ok! Thanks! We should be back Tuesday evening, so I will try to update then if possible. She is spending a lot of time near the top of the tank. Is that something we should be concerned about? (I think part of it may be that she didn't like the weekend feeder thing in there--just took it out an hour or so ago.) Just curious.
  15. Thanks! I am going to need it. Tank parameters last night were the same as the night before so we didn't do a water change. Tank parameters tonight: Temp: 75F pH: 7.4 Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrites: 0.20 ppm Nitrates: 15 ppm We are getting ready to be out of town for 2 days and I am really nervous something will happen to the water while we are gone! Should we do the water change tonight to get rid of the nitrites or do one in the morning? Should we change out 100% or less? We fed her tonight and she isn't eating well. I am hoping we return to an ok tank and can do the Prazi. Let me know what you think. We bought some of the little "weekend fish food feeders" and put one in for her to try and she didn't touch it. I think it bothered her because she stayed away from its location in the tank.
  16. Tank parameters tonight: Temp: 77F pH: 7.4 Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrates: 5-10ppm Nitrites: 0ppm!!! Nitrites have been low all week. Got the first zero reading tonight. We are going to hold off on the water change since the parameters seem ok I think. Pucca is doing pretty well. She seems to be a bit more active the past couple days. She is hanging out near the top of the tank a lot tonight...not sure why. Once we are sure the tank is cycled, should we try the Prazi to make sure we got the flukes if that is what the problem was or wait to see if the water quality fixes it? Just wondering. (Its finals week, so I may be scarce, but I will try to get on as much as possible.)
  17. Ok...I doubt I'll catch up for the whole weekend, but I will try to start posting more often again. Water parameters tonight: Temp: 76F pH: 7.4 Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrate: 20 ppm Nitrite: 0.25ppm Nitrites seem to be going down! Yay! I'll try to post tomorrow.
  18. Hey. I had a camping trip this weekend, but my boyfriend took care of water changes and recorded parameters. I will try to post them tonight if I have time. I think the nitrites may be going down a bit...hard to tell though. Just wanted to post a quick update. More later...
  19. Ok. Is 100% better at keeping the nitrites down? It is strangely easier and faster to do than the 90s, so not complaining, just wondering. I saw some poop two days ago...haven't been home much to watch though. I'll keep an eye out during the water change.
  20. Ok...finally have 5 seconds free! I hate the end of the semester...WAY too much to do and no where near enough time to keep my fish happy. Tank parameters from last night: Temp: 76F, pH: 7.4, Ammonia: 0ppm, Nitrite: 3-4ppm, Nitrate: 20 ppm. Tank parameters tonight: Temp: 76F Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: 2-3ppm Nitrate: 10 ppm Should we do two 90%s or try another 100%? She is trying to eat right now. Attacking the food "cube" pretty well...she still seems to be having trouble opening her mouth very wide though.
  21. Hey...school craziness! We did the 100% water change last night. I will post again tonight if I can.
  22. Tank parameters tonight: Temp: 74F pH: 7.4 Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrite: 3-4 ppm Nitrate: 10-15 ppm We did a double water change as usual. I will still try to get better photos up of the worms/flies...there aren't enough hours in the day!
  23. That is an issue I have to deal with every summer, even though all our windows have insect screens. If your filter has air-holes or slits in the cover, you can try covering them with pantyhose. This will keep some of the gnats out of the filter. Is your problem caused by worms hatching into flies or by flies getting into the tank? The bugs we keep getting are hatching from worms that were in the filter media somehow...they will stay in the area between the water and the tank lid and fly out when we open the lid to put food in. Aside from that, they seem to stay in the tank. I just hope they are nothing bad for her...
  24. She opens her mouth, but not very far. When she does eat, we put in in her glass jar so she can kind of smash it against the side and it stays there while she eats it. She isn't opening her mouth wide to do this...nibbling almost. We put it in the glass jar so the current doesn't keep it away from her. Anything that floats still gets away from her too fast for her to open her mouth a little and eat it. I will make sure we rinse the filter out more often. I was worried about messing up the cycle, but maybe we can flush out whatever is hatching into bugs...they are getting a bit annoying.
  25. Eww! We will keep an eye on it. How often is ok (I don't want to get rid of the good algae that is building up bacteria right?)? Pucca picked at the food and I think got a little down tonight. Might try some peas tomorrow and see if she can get them in yet. She still isn't opening her mouth very wide to eat. Hopefully when the nitrites get under control, she will get better...
