1. I'm scrapping my goldfish tank project things came up again yesterday and I didn't have time until this afternoon to deal with it, then it took *so* long just to drain the tank - I'd forgotten how time consuming and how much work it was without the water changer. Seems like it's just not the right time for it with my busy schedule, I don't want to neglect the fishies. I'm so sad! I've really missed having fish. I'm looking into getting a Betta instead, a 5 or 10 gallon tank seem so much more manageable right now. Anyway, I did one more test before I put the tank away and this is what I got - pH 6.2 (color between the 6.0 and 6.4, tested it twice) ammonia 0.50 ppm nitrite over 5.0 ppm? It was very a very bright purple that I couldn't match to any of the colors in the chart nitrate 80 ppm I'm still concerned about the pH rising and dropping so drastically. What should I do with that when setting up a small tank?
2. Sorry, I managed to post it by accident before finishing writing it out and now it won't let me edit it -_- Here's what I meant to type: I started a fishless cycle on 1/25/15. I'll admit that I've been bad about paying much attention to it, it's been a very crazy two months and the tank has been happily bubbling away on it's own without me doing nothing other than replacing my AC70 with my old Fluval 305 when the AC finally kicked it. I tested the tap water on 1/25: pH 8.2 ammonia 0.50 ppm Then I added Stability and Prime to the tank, I can't remember if I added anything for the pH, I do remember that the tank had been set up for about a week or so at this point, I hadn't had a chance to go buy the ammonia. This is my tank water on 1/25 before adding 4 ppm of ammonia: pH 7.2 ammonia 0.50 ppm nitrite/nitrate 0 ppm 1/26 ammonia 4 ppm 2/1 ammonia 4 ppm pH 7.3 (it wasn't dark enough to be 7.4 but it was too dark to be 7.2) nitrite/nitrate 0 ppm It got fun a couple days ago: 3/2 ammonia 1.0/2.0 ppm 3/3 ammonia 0.50 ppm Then today: pH 8.4 ammonia 0 ppm Nitrite 5.0 ppm Nitrate 80 ppm I bumped up the ammonia to 1 ppm tonight, this is the first time I've added anything to the tank since 1/25. It's too late to do a water change right now, unfortunately. I'm not sure what to do with the pH, should I add the Neutral Regulator to it or just leave it alone and monitor it? Should I add anything at all to the tap water after the water change? Should I do a full water change or just a large one? At this point, how much longer do you guys thing it might be before it's done cycling?

4. Pictures would be awesome!! Thank you all! Looks like I'll be ordering two Aqueon 30's - I'd love to see pictures too!
5. Hey guys! It's been a long while, I've been fish-less for the last year due to another forced move that left me crashing with my sister for several months while I got back on my feet. I gave my 55g tank with my remaining fish and all my goodies to one of my uncles and he's been babying the heck out of them. I'd given my smaller thank with my two chubby ranchu babies, unfortunately she was too busy to take care of them properly and they both ended up dying She's returned my tank and I've gotten the goldfish itch back I've cleaned the heck outta it, ordered a bunch of stuff off Amazon and today I set up the tank to start a fishless cycle. Problem is my AC70 is being way louder than I remember, I think the motor's on it's way out - I've cleaned the entire thing piece by piece and it hasn't helped. I'm on a budget so I'm thinking of going with an Aqueon QuietFlow since a lot of you seem to like it. Would you guys go for two 50's or one 55/70? I'm concerned about the flow being too strong. The tank is about 30g and it's bow front and I don't plan on having more than two fish in it, probably ranchus again. Anyway, I'm excited. I miss having fish and I'm looking forward starting off the right way this time around. Hopefully soon(ish) I'll have my tank all ready to home some cute goldfish
6. I did try other things first, the issue was that it was getting direct sunlight because I had issues with positioning the tank I ended up having to take out my bedroom door to be able to push the tank over enough so it won't get any direct sunlight anymore, hopefully that'll solve that issue. I don't really have a floater, Elessar has had buoyancy problems for a long time now but they're not severe and thankfully the other two fish have gotten a lot better since I started the metromed, I do have lots of water movement in the tank as well as two air stones, so hopefully that's helping. Their gills look normal to me right now, or at least they don't look dramatically different, it's not really something I pay close attention too but I'll start to from now on. I don't have any jumpstart but I'll make sure to get some to keep in handy. Thank you guys! It really does make me feel better to hear about the kidneys. I'm staying far, far away from algeacidals in the future, I'd rather have green water than dead fish
7. About a month and a half ago I was an absolute idiot and overdosed my 55g tank with API Algeafix, instead of doing the 1ml/10gal I did 10ml/10gal I don't even know how I misread the directions. I dosed the tank sometime late at night and went to sleep, the following day I didn't really paid attention to the fish as I was running late for work and by the time I came back in the afternoon I noticed them being lethargic. Looking at them more closely, their slime coat were pretty much falling/peeling off them and they were starting to get what looked like fin rot. I panicked and did a 100% water change, cleaned the heck outta my tank and rinsed the filters out as best as I could. Sadly my smallest fish, Frodo the lionhead, didn't make it. A few days later he started bloating, then pineconing (is that even a word...?) and being floaty. I tried isolating him and giving him metromed food but he died a couple days later. My other fish took a week or so before they started acting normal again. As far as I can tell anyway. Elessar never fully recovered from the water python accident earlier this year and has been somewhat floaty ever since so it's hard to judge if he's having any new issues with buoyancy. Arwen and Tenshi seemed to be doing okay, but last week Arwen started acting floaty and Tenshi started getting bloated and pineconing (I tested the water and everything was normal, there hadn't been any changes in food and I did try treating him for bloat until he started showing signs of pineconing). I started them all on metromed food and they both responded pretty well to it, a few days later they were both back to normal. They still have another 5 days of meds to go and they're still doing okay, slime coats are back in place and fins look healthy again. I'm not concerned about the water quality right now, I've been testing it often since this whole mess, and everything is within normal limits and I also keep up with my weekly water changes. I haven't used algeafix again and probably will never again. Do any of you guys have any info on the long term effects of Algeafix overdose or have any advice? I was pretty heart broken to loose Frodo (never thought I'd cry over a fish!) and I really don't wanna loose my other fishies
8. So, outta the blue one of my relatives calls me and tells me that another relative had left a fish for me at their house :/ I thought it'd be yet another poor feeder goldfish but was pretty surprised to find this guy instead: I don't know what gender it is but I keep calling it a he lol. He's a little bigger that he looks in the picture (plus I have big hands! lol) and I have no idea how old it is. Seems healthy, has been living in my 30g tank for the last two weeks (my tank now sparkles...) and hasn't been bothering the other fish at all and eats like a pig. I can't keep him, he's probably already too big for my 30g tank. I would love to see him go to someone that actually know about common plecos and their needs. I'm the SF Bay Area I'd prefer a local pick up but may consider shipping for the right person.
9. Sorry, didn't see your post! I don't have them anymore, sorry
10. lol this is kind of an old picture (right now Audrey's decided to be a pet hole, she refused to come out of her tunnel), but she hasn't changed at all She's a rose hair tarantula and I've had her for about 7 or 8 years
11. thanks for that website, seems really helpful! I'm so so sure about bettas, though I'm tempted going with a community tank No more goldies I think that once they get to a certain size I'd feel they'd be too cramped in the 30g and I really don't have the space to upgrade to a larger tank here (I'm gonna be living here for the next 2-3 years). One day I'll own a big house and have big tanks full of goldies everywhere xD For now, I'm limited to my one 55g xP It's definetely gonna be a slow process of getting it set up for other fish, other than Tenshi and Frodo there it's pretty empty and I'm not getting paid for another couple weeks xD thanks!
12. I moved to the studio It's not a small as my dad had made it out to be (it's been over 7 years since I last saw the inside of it and from the outside it looked pretty darn tiny). Once the person who was living here moved out and I was actually able to see the inside of it I was pretty much kicking my self for having rehomed my three fishies They ended up going to a friend of my aunt's, and my aunt tells how how they're doing sometimes so that at least makes me feel a bit less awful. Anyway, the move was a pain, even thought it was literally moving next door. I had set up two large rubbermaid containers with their filters and bubblers, emptied out the tank and cleaned it out, all was ready to just haul it over to set it up again... but the person who was supposed to help me move them last something to do last minute and I wasn't able to get any help till the next day. Tenshi and Frodo had me freaked out for a while, they did not enjoy the overnight stay in their rubbermaid container, in the morning they were both bottom sitting and only moving around to eat. They seem to be back to normal now though and the other big guys never really seemed to have any trouble. I have them separated for now, but I'm planning to move them all in the big one soon. Arwen, Elessar and Sharkie. Elessar's wen started going white about a month and a half, it's about 1/2 there, can't wait until he's all white Tenshi and Frodo. All the non-furry kids together. I ended up rehoming my snake too I did move my tarantula to that tank though, I think she's enjoying the space at least (her last home was half the size) I think the best of it is that I can see my fish from pretty much anywhere in the studio anytime, at my dad's house they were all in the living room and I never really spend much time in there.
13. ahhh! can this post be moved? I accidentally added it to the wrong forum, meant for it go to the Tropical Fish Discussion forum -_-; I'm sorry!
14. I finally moved last week and the studio ended up being a lot more spacious than I had though I was able to set up my 30g tank again (it originally had goldfish that I had to rehome fortunately they went together to a great home). I'm using the canister filter I had up with my larger tank since it's already cycled and I currently have two small goldfish there. I want to move them back to the 55g and set up this one with tropical fish and would love suggestions of what to put in it (and how many fish would comfortably live there). Right now is pretty bare, I find it a lot easier to clean after the goldfish that way, but I'm planning on adding gravel and live plants. I'm leaning towards angelfish, but I'm pretty open to anything
15. thanks for the tips! I can't wait until Sunday to set it up. I already put some extra media in the tank to hopefully start getting some of those bb's on it would running all three filters be too much? Ohh, that's such a great deal! When I was first starting setting up my big tank nothing was on sale... of course, two weeks later everything was on sale and I couldn't return anything xD
