  1. Well then, it's settled! I have at least TWO confirmed hatchings in that tank that took place completely without my attention or knowledge. . . haha! I have 2 other 7-8 month old babies that were born to two fish who lived for quite a while in my tank outside that holds my supply of duck weed, too. One looks like a common, the other is a fantail. . . even though both of those parents were fantails. Go figure!
  2. Can Guppies and goldfish cross breed? I can't explain his small size AT ALL, and stranger things have happened in my tank (I now have 3 hatchling crayfish wandering around in there which I was told was impossible, a fish who had half his face eaten off by the big crayfish and continues to thrive, and 8 guppies who have managed to survive in a tank with 8 5"+ goldfish and 3 8" tinfoil barbs. . . just to name a few of my anomalies currently swimming around in there!)
  3. So, my friend asked to take some cutting from my ridiculously overgrown plants over 3 months ago and says that this little fella was a stow-away in the bag. Anyone have ANY idea what he is? At the time I had guppies (supposed to be feeder fish, but never got eaten), Tinfoil Barbs, and a bunch of various goldfish so those are the options. I told her it looked like a common goldfish but she says this little guy is only about 1" long still which seems off for a goldfish, even if it was just a fertile egg on the plant leaves, yes? For size reference, those are all sprigs of anachris he's swimming in.
  4. Thanks guys! Yes, they have little baby-wens growing. . . so they totally fit into my Oranda "theme" Sakura is a color, when a fish is red and white with a combination of matte and shiny scales . . . these two both seem to have TEENY specks of black on their tails, which may make them technically calico (right? right.) but it looks a bit like ammonia burn, so I'll wait a week or so and see if the black disappears. Also, PInG/PONG. . . love it! Girl = Ping, boy= Pong. . . yes?
  5. Hey guys, I know it's been a while but I needed to share this phenomenal find with folks who would appreciate it! I just picked up TWO (look like one male, one female) sakura-colored crown pearlscales from my semi-big-box LFS . . . and get this, they were in the "misc. Goldfish" tank so they were $2.99 each! Here are my beauties Boy Girl No names yet, any suggestions?
  6. So, I thought this was Ich because Big Black came to me with a tiny ich spot and seemed rather prone to the problem but readily healed with salt and heat. But, since upgrading to the larger tank, I decided to pull him and put him in my quarantine tank anyway. 1 week of salt &80 degrees = no change. Now, we've done a week of Melafix and Pimafix and while the issue isn't SPREADING, it doesn't look much better either. Anyone? Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level 0 * Nitrite Level between 0 and .5 * Nitrate level 40 (he's a huge fish, the filter is still getting used to him!) * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) PH 6.8, KH 40, GH 150 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) PH 6.8 . . . GH 75, KH 80 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? 5 in 1 strips (I knooow) * Water temperature? 80 F * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 20 gallon long, running 3-4 months * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Emperor 280, which I had assumed was plenty for a tiny tank that really only holds 2 Platties and a betta. * How often do you change the water and how much? once a week, 60-75% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 6, was advised to wait until done with Pima and Mela * How many fish in the tank and their size? 1 5-6 inch Oranda, 2 platties (less than one inch), one Betta (1.5 - 2 inches) * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime and Stability. * What do you feed your fish and how often? Omega One goldfish flakes for the Oranda, and Tetra tropical crisps for the platties & Betta. * Any new fish added to the tank? Just the sick fish. * Any medications added to the tank? Melafix and Pimafix. * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. always salted to .1, 1 week salted to .3 , and one week mela & pima fix. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Just the white patch pictures below. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? NOTHING! He behaves totally normally, eats, swims, interacts through the glass. No other fish he's been in contact with have gotten the white patches either and they are all acting normal as well (if not a little nervous about their whale of a roomate) Sorry, he's pretty terrible about letting me take pictures of it. . . probably self conscious Anyone recognize that stuff? At first it almost looked like his fin was disintegrating in that spot, now it looks almost like peeling skin after a sunburn. So weird!
  7. Saw this fish at Wally World, didn't get him because the other fish didn't look so hot (and he looks almost EXACTLY like my Juicy) but I had to share his crazy tail. . . top half of the tail is single. . . while the bottom splits into a traditional fantail shape! Interesting right?! I've never seen something like that, nor did I know that could even HAPPEN, although with wally world you never really know where their mutant-fish come from! Just wanted to share
  8. That's not a fish, he's a cartoon come to life! What a fantastic solution to the whole wen-growing-into-eyes problem though, eh? Adorable!
  9. Thanks guys! He's a tank fave That's interesting about the stars not being indicative of maturity. . . I wonder why they don't match up?
  10. Ok, this is not a fish story but it's similar in it's sweet, totally silly guy-moment Walmart-ness to yours that I just have to share: a year or so ago my female Shih-Tzu went into heat and I could not for the LIFE of me find her newborn onsie [used to contain the mess] so my very dear fiance offered to drive to Wally World and get one. . . An HOUR later he arrived home with a tiny black outfit with a tuxedo front drawn on it and the words "Happy New Years!" -- He explained his purchase, and length of absence like this, ver batum: "Well, first, this is AWESOME. Second, now she'll have something to wear for New Years. And third, did you have ANY idea how many dumb onsies there are in the baby section?! Lolly [our dog] is better than that." That may well have been the moment I KNEW I needed to marry him <3 I still smile picturing him spending 40 minutes in the baby clothing section (we don't have kids) looking for an outfit for my DOG! I'm sure you felt the same, isn't it great our guys care so much about our pets?
  11. Hahaha, poor girl, but so very fun to watch. I love that look of determination Oranda's get when food is involved
  12. Aww thanks guys! He'd blush, but he's worried that will take away from his MANLY cheek decor
  13. Indeed! It's a regular ol' fishy pissing contest since I put Big Black in Quarantine!
  14. My boys are all growed up! Here's Punch, who got breeding stars since LAST NIGHT when I posted pictures of him. Seriously. I do have one question though, if goldfish aren't sexually mature until 1-2 years old, and Punch is only about 3" long now, is he stunted? Or are fish just maturing earlier due to selective breeding? Either way, here's our new proud member to the MAN CLUB! This one also serves as a pretty cool representative of an Oranda with cheek stars. . . I can't see any on my black Oranda, so maybe it has something to do with his coloring?
