  1. Tap ph is usually 7.4, did not check just now.

    I use prime

Just checked his belly and eating - one pellet of food got him interested, but he is very week and could not right himself and find it.

i am not used to feeling fish bellies, so I don't know what I am looking for, but in general, his belly feels like the rest of him, but IS depressable just before the vent.

  2. Hello, I'm sorry your oranda is having issues.

    Is he taking food?

Could you gently feel the stomach to see how it is?

    Check gills and mouth.

Do you recall him/her pooping the last few days? If so, what did it look like?

Do you have gravel in the tank? If so, how deep?

Gills a bit red, nothing odd about the mouth.

Did not see pooping, no gravel in tank.

    Will check stomach.

Checked chemistry 2 days ago - all normal (0) except pH was high (8.2) - Adjusted pH down, added salt to .1%.

What did you use to lower the pH, and how long did it take?

Used wardley pH down, took an hour.

    Is he taking food?

Ate this morning - did not try now - should I?

  3. If you can get a picture or a video, it would really be helpful. (:

Also, have these fish ever been treated for flukes?

fish was treated for flukes with prazi pro and had a salt bath about a year ago.

Will get you a pic, but won't be helpful, fish is lying on his side, barely breathing, with tailfin shredded, some light streaking and otherwise looks healthy

GG my calico oranda was bottom sitting the past few days, he could hold himself upright, though, and would feed normally - fins were clamped and one was frayed. I thought it may be constipation. Checked chemistry 2 days ago - all normal (0) except pH was high (8.2) - Adjusted pH down, added salt to .1%.

This morning fish ate fine. I got a text from my daughter when she came home from school that the fish was dying and getting nipped.

When I got home, about an hour ago his tail fin was caught in the filter intake and he was swimming against the suction, but couldn't get free.

I got him free and quickly set up a hospital tank in a 29 filled to 20. Currently he is in there, but no motion and lying on his side, no c shape, but slightly curved, breathing very slowly.

No filter, just bubbles and heater.

Not sure what to do next.

Only change in routine in last few days was started feeding Hikari frozen brine shrimp w/ spirulina.

    Help is appreciated

  4. taking a second look at those pics above from 2 weeks ago, things may not have changed that much. Maybe just the lighting. what do you think? I still think there is clearly streaking, but it is also not nearly as bad as what my pearlscale had a few months ago.

  5. temp 72F

    api drops

    ammonia 0

    nitrites 0

    nitrates 5

    ph ~7.6

salted last week to .1% because a couple of fish had white spots on their fins, and one was a little ragged. The white spots were gone within 2 days of salting.

Been doing 50% water changes twice a week.

  6. Thanks, good to know - I never would have seen them if not for the photo - and they are barely visible in the other photos.

BTW, if anyone is interested, I go the top down shots by dipping the lens into the tank.

Any links to any other good ways to sex goldfish?

my common has his nose up the comets' butts, so I assume it is male, and I think the pearlscale is doing the same in the fancy tank.

I am resting him from round 4 of prazi this weekend and then we start round five.

  7. Ok, so I am finally posting pics of my fish -

    IMG_1472.JPG

This is "Bug Eye" when I first got him.

    IMG_1034.JPG

Here he is now - totally orange, but very happy and a great eater. I have seen the most growth from him.

    IMG_9895.JPG

This is Steve when I first got him, in december 2011.

    IMG_1027.JPG

Here he is last week with Panda (RIP). He has definitely grown, but no real wen growth.

    IMG_1014.JPG

This is Mac and Cheese - I have had him about 6 months, and he seems to suffer from "failure to thrive." He was always a little sickly and has a little bump at the front of his dorsal that prevents it from going straight up. He eats well, though.

He also has a weird scale pattern and gill cover. He hasn't really grown all that much since I got him, and I never noticed the blue spot behind his right eye until recently.

    IMG_1102.JPG

    IMG_0943.JPG

This if Freckles. He has not grown either. His right caudal fins are much smaller than the left, and curl. He looks completely differet on either side. He was sold as a faintail, but he looks Ryukin to me.

    IMG_0940.JPG

    IMG_0937.JPG

This is Obama. He went through some hard times back in February, but is doing great now. He is my only fish that does not go up to the top of the tank during feeding. He will only eat sinking pellets, and almost never gets above the half-way mark for any reason.

    IMG_1051.JPG

This is Pompom the pearlscale. He hasn't grown much. He also recently has some issues. He seems to be doing fine now.

    IMG_1072.JPG

This is Gorgeous George or GG. He is the latest addition, and is still in QT.

    IMG_0929.JPG

    Group shot.
