  1. so i haven't cycled a tank in about 7 years.... and here i am cycling my tank from scratch and i am lost !! no idea what i am doing..... LOL

anyways it is day 4 ! day 4 of 'cycling'.

let me tell you what i have done so far....

well fish tank got polluted with several containers of food.

so completely stripped tank and filters. even left filters out over night to dry on sink.

rinsed plants and drift wood good and put them back into the tank.

filled tank with water conditioned water. API brand. SUPER STRENGTH.

didnt do a water test till yesterday.

been adding a large pinch of fish food and sometime days a algae disk to produce ammonia in tank. been doing that in a stocking due to not wanting no ugly flakes getting stuck in plants so this way they break down and disappear to nothing. sometimes i rub the stocking and a cloud of food comes out... hehe

anyways yesterday i did a test.

ammonia nitrates and nitrites all nothing.

    ph off the chart.

so first water change. say about 40% got changed

today , readings were still all ZERO

so dumped some more food in a few hours ago.

    readings ph 6.0

    nitrates 0

    nitrites 0

ammonia 0.25 but a weak colour for that so maybe not even that high.

am i doing this right ???? i'm lost. why is there no other readings unless i over dose with food and then i only get ammonia.

i only started keeping track of readings yesterday.

there is a whole bunch of well established drift wood. many years in a good cycle tank and with heaps of Anubias and Fontinalis. heaps of fontinalis.

oh there was 2 snails in the tank too. havent seen them amongst the plants at all !!!

(sorry if this is on the wrong spot. just checking i am doing this right ?) apparently 7 years is enough to forget cycling from scratch. usually i would just stick a filter or 2 in another tank for a month then put it in the tank i want with half water from the tank they were sitting in and half new fresh water and this would be sufficient to be 'cycled' already. never had a problem or a bad reading doing that. but since i only have small tanks now and i haven't got the big array of tanks available this isn't really possible anymore.

  2. i love how curious they are... whenever the camera came up to a tank they would swim up to the front and check out what was going on. they ALL looked so happy and healthy... so refreshing to see something like this instead of plastic cups and tiny tanks....

bettas are wonderful fish full of personality. i love them.

  3. i can grab some from another tank i have if i wanted to (but thanks heaps for the offer)... i have a few tanks. but i'm happy to take the long road and start from scratch... it has been FOREVER since i've done a fishless cycle from start. so just seeing if i still got it.... ;) besides i want to wait a while before i get another goldie... i hate when fish die and even though i only had these little guys for just over a week , i still feel heaps bad and dont want another just yet. i was sooooo keen to watch these tiny fish grow into something big and fabulous.

  4. i cant even be mad at her... it was my silly fault. i should have taken precaution. just makes me feel sick to the stomach the poor suffocating death the fish would have had.

and i am mad at myself because that was my most stable well established and cycled tank that NEVER gives me problems with water conditions... even when over stocked and full of fish and whatever else i put in there over the years, nothing ever tipped it over the edge. the plants and filters did a awesome job... just hope i can get it all back like that again.

  5. So a bit of background info first... i have 2 houses on this block. one house is out the back and one at the front. back house is usually rented to students or people but i've decided not to do that anymore and made it my pet place where all my tanks live and pets....

anyways.... i've also had a 3 yr old at my house for the last 3 days.... she goes back and forth between the houses because there is a bunch of toys and stuff at the back house and the front house is where we all live. anyways some time during late yesterday arvo she must have decided fishies need food. and poured 4 tubs of food into the tank (the whole new tub of flakes, fighting fish food, algae disks and tropical flakes) DUMB me didnt put the hood back down on the tank. i usually only leave heated tanks closed to trap heat in but not my cold water one, i usually leave it up and well i didn't think.... and this little 3yr old is USUALLY sooooo very good and never does anything naughty or that she knows she shouldn't.... silly me for forgetting she is only 3! well because i didnt go to the back hour after 5pm yesterday and ldidnt go there before work today because i had stuff to do here... i didnt notice till this arvo when i went to go feed all the fishies and birds and noticed i had a VERY brown muddy looking tank. fishies didnt make it either.... they gone :( my poor babies... im really upset and angry at myself for not going to check everything was ok last night and not taking 10 mins of my time this morning just to go feed and see the fish. i feel so bad for the fish to suffer in the water. must have been a horrible death.

so i've just spent the last few hours totally stripping the tank and washing everything even the plants got a bath....

back to square one... i wont get any more goldies till the tank is well cycled and i find ones that i fall in love with. feel sick and wont replace my babies for a while....

Me = bad goldfish mummy. :cry1

  6. i had the same idea just the other day, to find some sort of long large tube (i was going to use clear hard plastic water pipes)... great idea. i've got the same problem. am trying to find a solution to position the food in a certain spot in the tank.

  7. Both are very Nice looking I really am impressed with your ninja though he looks big...Is he a king by chance??I can't really tell if he's a Dragon scale or not I'm thinking not do you have any other pics of him not so blown up??

i couldn't find a ruler, so i used a dinner fork as a standard item to compare him against...lol. this is ninja right up against the glass and the dinner fork... see he is really small... :)

i should have done a comparison with sushi. He is much bigger, but still only average size.

but here is some photos of sushi and ninja anyways... (these were from today) *NOTE* ninjas tail...perfect chunks taken out of it... GRRRRR tail bitter. but he hasnt done it for a while now... those are just old bites that haven't grown back.
