  1. What is the best kind of filter system for goldfish. I have a whisper EX70 that came with my 55 gallon aquarium and it just hooks on the back of the tank. Is this style the filter of choice or would a canister filter be a better idea. Another question I have is if you have such a filter how often do you change the carbon filter? I believe the packages I purchase recommend a new filter every month.

  3. Hello, There seems to be two main foods used by the people on this board. Omega One, and Hakari. I was just wondering if anyone out there feeds their fancies New life Spectrum goldfish formula. I have been feeding my fish the hormone-free color enhancing 3mm sinking pellets since I started keeping goldfish. It is also the food recommended to me by the helpful staff at Big Al's Aquarium services here in Brampton Ontario.
  4. I did have a pearl scale in a 55 gal. with 3 other Orandas and the golfball was bullied untill I removed him from the tank. Its shape and movement seemed to attracted the other fish and he was always too slow to get away from them. I think you should only keep evenly matched fish in the same aquarium to keep things fair. I would keep golfball pearlscales in their own aquarium, or with another type that won't cause any competition or stressfull conflict.
  5. I would try feeding her 4 pellets in the morning. In the afternoon feed her a few peas and in the evening 4 more pellets. It sounds to me like she is just REALLY hungry. Feed her more but break it up so she's not eating so much at once. The peas may help with any gas problem as well.
  6. Yes Lennard , I have been adding 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons every water change and I've been doing that for over a year. (since I started keeping goldfish) What I recently read was on the fish sempai website and it had said to put 1 tablespoon per gallon and that would put my salt level at .3% and that it would not be hard on the fish but it would be enough to kill parasites. I don't want to mess with mother nature though so I am doing water changes now over the weekend and adding fresh water. So I will get rid of the salt by Monday night. I thought I would ask the pros here on this web board because there seems to be two schools on the topic.
  7. I've been doing it for two weeks now, but I will start the water changes right away. So I guess that answers my question
  8. Hello I started off putting 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons of water in my goldfish aquarium, I later read online that I should put 1 tablespoon per gallon which I now do. My fish seem to be doing ok. But I have recently added a few plants to my aquarium and I wonder how the salt will effect my plants. I have also been doing more research and finding that most other sources tell me not to add salt at all. Should I be messing with mother nature by adding salt to a freshwater environment?
