  1. Thanks helen. Ive decided to just not worry about what I need to get done at school this evening so i can head home and get eugene set up in a qt tank. I do want to keep trying, I know he's not ready to give up yet!
  2. Oh no no, I only make metro gel food when I need to treat. Otherwise there's never any meds in the food. I know sometimes Gill gets a bit of it by I try my best to avoid having him get any of the medicated food. Eugene usually takes it right from a spoon from me. I will ask my mom about the tests, at least for ammonia and nitrite/nitrate
  3. Test Results for the Following: haven't tested lately, will do so when im home * Ammonia Level(Tank) * Nitrite Level(Tank) * Nitrate level(Tank) * Ammonia Level(Tap) * Nitrite Level(Tap) * Nitrate level(Tap) * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? * Water temperature? 22 Celsius * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 38 gallons, running for years * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Aquaclear 50 and tetra whisper ex45 * How often do you change the water and how much? Lately about every two weeks (due to school) and about 40-50% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? about 5 days ago, 50% * How many fish in the tank and their size? 2 fish, each about 4 inches plus tail * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime * What do you feed your fish and how often? Gel food every day. Frozen blood worms and brine shrimp as a treat * Any new fish added to the tank? No * Any medications added to the tank? Metronidazole * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Only metro within the last year, usually in the food * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Large gill tumor, black scales in a patch suddenly gold, eyes cloudy * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Lying upside down on bottom or floating upside down. Slightly tilted. Not using fins on one side of body, not eating Hi guys. Im writing this on my phone on a bus, so bear with me. Eugene has had dropsy on and off for a long time. It usually surfaces every couple months, and I treat him with metronidazole gel food that I make. The last time this happened, I saw pineconing on him in January. I made up some gel food and treated him. The symptoms mostly went away but not fully. In February, it was back. So I decided to treat him again even though I really dislike using meds that much. Long story short, it did not work at all. He is not able to swim upside right. He is either floating upside down or sunk right to the bottom upside down. He is also not completely vertically upside down, but tilted slightly to one side. It also appears that he isn't even using one side oh his body. As a side note, Eugene has a large tumor on his gill. It hasnt been affecting him too much though but it sure looks uncomfortable. Now I've been hoping that clean water and good food would help him feel better, but he's been getting progressively worse. My other fish, Gill has been getting really aggressive toward Eugene lately so I had to put a tank divider in. Now Eugene can floated motionless and slightly tilted without getting picked on.... Unfortunately I haven't been able to set up a hospital tank due to life circumstances. . Two days ago, when Eugene took a turn for the worse, his eyes started clouding over as if he has cataracts. This really worried me, so I decided to dose the whole tank with metro. I know its not good for Gill but theres nothing I could do about that and im not going to lose Eugene. He was doing so poorly last night, I was afraid I was going to lose him overnight. But he made it through the night. He was lying upside down on the bottom underneath the bubble wall. He was still breathing. Im headed to school now (hence the bus) but unfortunately I am not going to be able to make it home until Friday evening. My mom is at home with Eugene, so she'll be able to keep me updated and treat the tank with whatever you guys might suggest. I really need help here. I have no idea what to do
  4. Wow, Helen, great job! You sure are brave!
  5. Hi Alex, Good to hear from you! Thanks for your input. That's what I had already feared. I'm going to be going to the vet soon (have to take in a sick gecko), so I might as well pick up some extra metro while I'm there. I just wish there was something permanent that I could do about his tumor! I think that would make him a lot more comfortable, but if there are no options... well, I guess I'll just keep him as happy as I can. Thanks
  6. Hey guys, It's been a while since I've been around. So hello! I'm concerned about my moor Eugene. He's just been one big, ongoing health problem. He's had dropsy several times now (it just seems to come and go with him), and I've treated with metronidazole each time. Seems to work, but I hate having to medicated him so often. I make up a gel food with the medication in it, and feed it to him that way. He's also had a tumor on his gills (on his left side) for going on a couple of years now. The first time I saw it, it grew pretty big, and then fell off on its own. The next time, it got big again, and then shrunk down. Now, its been getting bigger and bigger, and its also changing colour in parts. Some parts of it are red, some a dark purple/black colour, but the majority of it is just kind of a transleucent tissue colour. It looks really uncomfortable, and it has just been getting worse (slowly). I noticed today that he has a small red-ish pink mark on his underside (I think its because he's been bottom sitting lately, a lot). He looks so unhappy He is actually tilting a little bit right now, just leaning to one side on the bottom. I don't know it the metro did the trick this time - his scales aren't pine coning any more, but he's still got other symptoms. I just wish I knew what I could do to help him - especially with the tumor. I can try to get pictures later, but I've posted several photos before in posts from a while ago. I will admit, I haven't been able to change the water in the tank as often as I wish I could lately, because it's the end of the semester at university, and I've been way over my head in papers and projects and exams. It's been a little over two weeks since I've done a water change. I'm going to be doing one today though. Hopefully that will help more poor Eugene feel a bit better. Also, water testing. I can't do it right now. I don't even have time to clean the tank today, but I'm going to be doing that regardless. I have a massive exam coming up in two days, plus four more exams in the days following. These problems (especially the tumor) have persisted for a LONG time, and through any fluctuating water conditions. My water params are usually absolutely perfect, but no matter what, Eugene is still dealing with these health problems. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) - haven't tested * Nitrite Level(Tank) - haven't tested * Nitrate level(Tank) - haven't tested * Ammonia Level(Tap) - haven't tested * Nitrite Level(Tap) - haven't tested * Nitrate level(Tap) - haven't tested * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) - haven't tested * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) - haven't tested Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? - I use nutrafin drops * Water temperature? - about 20 celcius * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? - 38 gallons, many years * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? - aquaclear 50, tetra whisper ex45 * How often do you change the water and how much? - lately, it's been about every two weeks, and 40-50% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? - about two and a half weeks ago, 50% * How many fish in the tank and their size? - 2, both about 3 inches long plus tail * What kind of water additives or conditioners? - prime * What do you feed your fish and how often? - home made gel food daily * Any new fish added to the tank? - no * Any medications added to the tank? - metronidazole (just finished treatment yesterday) * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? - big tumor on gill, bottom sitting, slightly tilting, pretty bloated looking (was pine coning last week, but the meds helped with that), small pink spot under belly (from resting on bottom), other fish starting to pick on him * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? - see above
  7. Hi Helen, thanks for the response I have a tank divider that I could use if Gill gets too aggressive, but I don't really have anything else I can do. I can't set up a QT tank for when I'm gone, I don't have time to rehome Gill, and I definitely don't have time to find Eugene a new friend. I don't want Eugene to be alone over the summer; the last time he was alone, I was honestly scared he was going to die from loneliness/depression. I had never seen a fish behave the way Eugene did when he was alone. Gill is still leaving Eugene alone for now (he's been well behaved all of today so far), so I'll leave it as it is for now. My mom is going to be home and checking on them every day, so if she notices any aggression, I'll get her to put the divider in. They'll be able to reach me by cell phone some of the time that I'm gone, so at least sometimes I can get an update about how the fish are doing. If it gets any worse though, maybe I'll try to get my boyfriend to rehome him (or to get his own tank and to take Gill for me!!).
  8. Gill seems to have settled down today. He's leaving Eugene alone for the most part, which I'm happy to see, but I've noticed him act like this before, and it just ends up with Eugene being harassed more a couple of days later. Eugene is more active today than he was yesterday, so I'll take that as a good sign. *crosses fingers* let's hope Gill keeps behaving now..
  9. I treated Gill with PraziPro when he was in QT (maybe a month ago). I think I treated Eugene when I first got him also, but that was a few years ago now.
  10. I've been thinking about doing that. I'm just worried that Eugene would get depressed again being all alone if I moved Gill. He wasn't doing well when he was alone, but he's not doing much better being picked on like that. And I wouldn't be able to get a new fish and QT him and introduce him to Eugene since I'm gone all summer. The behaviour seems to have calmed down a bit right now, but who knows what goes on when I'm not watching the tank.
  11. Thanks Tested my tank a week ago, so params might not be quite right, but my tank levels really don't fluctuate much at all Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(tank): 0 * Nitrite Level(tank): 0 * Nitrate level(tank): 5-10 * Ammonia Level(tap): 0 * Nitrite Level(tap): 0 * Nitrate level(tap): 10 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips: or drops?: Nutrafin drops * Water temperature?: Room temperature, maybe 20 degrees celsius * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running?: 38 gallon, running for years * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? * How often do you change the water and how much?: Aquaclear 50 and Tetra Whisper EX45 * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change?: a week, 50% * How many fish in the tank and their size?: 2, body length 2.5 - 3.5" * What kind of water additives or conditioners?: Prime * What do you feed your fish and how often?: homemade gel food daily * Any new fish added to the tank?: Gill (the one causing all this trouble) * Any medications added to the tank? * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus?: Eugene has a tumor on his gill, and has tiny bits of what I assume to be fungus or something on the edge of his tail, but they never ever go away no matter what I treat the tank with or how clean the water is * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.?: Eugene seems stressed, occasional bottom sitting, not swimming perfectly horizontal, he is sometimes tilted upwards
  12. Here's a video http://s29.photobucket.com/user/goldfishgirl89/media/M4H06365.mp4.html
  13. bodoba, I've already left him my login information and everything for the forum Chelsea, I thought this too, but I just find it weird because I KNOW Eugene is a male, so why would Gill be harassing him like this? Gill has been picking on Eugene since the day I introduced them together, but it has only been THIS bad since I took the divider away today. Video is almost done uploading, so I'll post it in a sec!
  14. I just took the divider out now to see if that would do anything. At first Eugene continued to sit in the same place, and Gill went and devoured any little bit of food (or anything that looked like food) on Eugene's side of the tank. Eugene perked up a little bit, swam around a bit, and now Gill is just constantly all over him. Gill is swimming completely inside Eugene's tail, and Eugene is swimming away fast to get away. It looks like Gill keeps trying to pick at Eugene's.... err... bum, and if he's not doing that, then Gill is swimming right up beside Eugene, actually touching him, or swimming up in front of him so Eugene can't go where he wants to. It is non stop. Also, I think Eugene's tumor on his gill is really starting to bother him. The tumor has gotten bigger. It is mostly clear tissue, but it has some dark spots in it, as well as some bright red bloody looking spots. Is Gill maybe picking on Eugene because of the tumor? Survival of the fittest or what have you? Right now, Eugene is lying on the bottom, and Gill is trying to shove himself underneath Eugene. This is ridiculous. I'll post a video of the behaviour really soon.
  15. Hey guys, I've written a few posts about the trouble Eugene has been having with Gill (Gill is being such a bully). I finally put a divider in the tank two days ago because Gill just wouldn't stop harassing Eugene, and it looked like Eugene had just given up and was sitting there taking it. Yesterday, Eugene seemed great. He was swimming around a lot more than he has been lately. He looked happy. He held his dorsal fin up high, and seemed to be feeling really good. Today.... not so much. Today he is lying at the bottom of the tank. He's wedged himself under the fish bowl that I have in the tank (just under the round part at the bottom of it), and he won't move. He's been sitting like that almost the entire day. Had no interest in his food, won't even look at me (which is extremely strange for him). I just don't know what to do. I'm leaving in two days, and I'll be gone for months (my boyfriend will be taking care of them while I'm gone, but he doesn't really know what to do when it comes to this stuff). Eugene looks so sad and depressed..
  16. *sigh* I still feel awful for Eugene. I'm going to try to pick up a divider tonight, and I wish I had a better solution for the time being. I'm leaving for my summer volunteer position in 11 days, and I have work a whole bunch of those days, so I can't be around to try to change Gill's behaviour. He's such a bully, and Eugene is helpless. His colour is starting to fade, his dorsal fin is never straight up and proud like it used to be, and he's just got this "please help me" look in his eyes. ugh... I don't know what to do! I can't leave the divider there all summer, that's just not fair. I'm hoping it doesn't come down to it, but I might have to rehome Gill (I'd try to find someone on here to take him, I wouldn't trust anyone else).
  17. What a gorgeous fish! Congrats!!
  18. Wow Kat, thanks for that reply! I too tried rearranging the tank, which seemed to mostly work. I added two big silk plants, and that really helped. Gill was initially terrorizing Eugene constantly. Now its just a big nip once in a while. I would love to try that method out, but unfortunately I'm at work all day, which is when most of the biting occurs. I guess all I can do for now if I can't be around to watch them is to try to find a divider to fit the tank. On a side note, poor Eugene is quickly losing his black colouring now I guess thats from the stress of Gill... I wish Eugene would try to stand up for himself; he's way bigger than Gill!
  19. Hey guys! I've had Gill in the new tank with Eugene for a little over a week now (or maybe a bit longer). At first, Gill was super aggressive toward Eugene, but then they seemed to calm down and started completely ignoring each other. A couple days later, they seemed to be more friendly to each other, but now, Eugene's tail is getting all torn up at the ends! For those of you who have seen a picture of Eugene, his tail is massive and beautiful!! But now its getting a bit shredded. I was cleaning my tank today, and just as I finished up, I saw Gill approach Eugene, and just watched them interact. Gill floated toward Eugene, went under his tail, seemed to be doing well, and then all of a sudden... CHOMP! Poor Eugene. Do you guys know of anything I could do to maybe stop this behaviour? I don't suppose there is very much I could do, but I figured I'd ask anyway!
  20. Thanks!! I'm excited! I leave in exactly two weeks now! I'm gunna miss my little guys though (and maybe my boyfriend too)
  21. Hey everyone! I'm leaving in two weeks for a volunteer position for the whole summer! I'm super excited but a little nervous too! My boyfriend and my mom have agreed to take care of my fish while I'm gone, and I really hope everything goes smoothly! I've left my login info for the forum with them, so I just wanted to let you all know that they might be posting on my behalf if there are any problems in my tank. If they do post, they might need some pretty detailed instructions on what to do (aside from the already incredibly detailed list of instructions that I've already written out for them)! Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know that! Hope all is well
  22. Hey guys! I'm just wondering, for those of you who make your own gel food, what veggies do you use? I was putting broccoli in some of my foods, and I know that can cause bloating problems, so what other veggies can I use? I want to make a huge batch of food and freeze some (as I often do). I'm going away for the summer, so I'm making enough food to last that whole time, but I want to make the best food I can! Any ideas? I know for sure I'll be using spinach, carrots and peas. I've used corn, sweet potato and a few others, but what are the best things to use? Thanks so much!!
