  1. I very much try to call things down the middle as i see them. I know that as humans we all have our guilty pleasures. I just see no difference in putting a fish in a bag for 2 days or a bowl other than the fact the bowl is actually the better of the 2. Yet we cringe at the thought of putting a goldfish in a bowl but getting to say "bag that fish please" brings a smile to all our faces :) Ironically as a large cichlid guy and a guy that buys his goldies big i have noticed something really strange about most pet stores. The smallest bowl for sale is often bigger than the largest fish bag! I have hauled many fish home in critter carriers and buckets. The difference in a bucket and a bowl? Color maybe shape?

  2. On a side note when we lost my best friend who was an avid fish keeper we put bettas in large bowls up for his funeral. I figured he would have wanted fish at his funeral i know i want lots at mine! Sure i could have wheeled in a 180 and loaded it up with big stunner discus but who wants to deal with all that crap when your best friend just died? So I picked up 2 crowntails 2 big bowls some gravel and few pieces of bamboo and took off to the funeral! Funeral was over bagged them back up took them home and tanked em. Does that make me horrible? If so i think i can live with myself for doing the one thing that he would have wanted done and exactly what he would have done for me :bye2:

  3. I may sound harsh but when it comes down to it I am probably one of the most guilty guys when it comes to everything i just accused fish keepers of. I love my fish and honestly do not know what my life would be like without them. It would probably suck real bad I could imagine. I really think that it is in our best interests as hobbyist to just let the idiots do what the idiots are going to do. By trying to get laws passed to stop the animal cruelty against fish you will be drawing attention to the practice of fish keeping in general. Our hobby has been threatened by law makers many times in the past. Fish to me are an amazing thing. I find it amazing that something so simple could bring together so many people from all walks of life. All i can advise as a fish keeper is you can not control the fate of every fish in the world but you do have the power to control the fate of your fish. Sometimes things get rough or a problem comes up that you do not know the answer to and that is when it is nice to have a group of fellow fish keeper and friends like everyone here at koko's to help you through and give you encouragement when you are having a rough go as a hobbyist. So please let idiots be idiots so i dont have to try to find away to hide my stash of fish from the feds. Depending on how harsh they get i may get culled!

  4. On another note for every goldfish anybody sees in their tank just know yours was probably the top 10% of its class. The other 90% :( This is not because the breeder wanted to do it. It is because everyone that puchases goldfish wants the prettiest one they can get. Pretty ones are not common. So to call someone evil or say they are doing something wrong when you are in fact you in your own way doing an acceptable evil by taking part in the hobby. It really surprises me we have so many people that are vocal about animal creulity when in fact they take part in it themselves. Fish keepers are very hypocritical people myself guilty as charged :) We all want the best we can get yet sometimes we forget getting the best results in the forgotten 90% :hummm This I believe is called "Human Nature"

  5. Sorry if i offended anybody but to me calling somebody out for animal cruelty without knowing how the operation is conducted, who is behind it, and what the motive is behind the operation would be no different than calling animal cruelty on the local "no kill" shelter for keeping the animals in cages. While the conditions are not always ideal for the animals it beats the alterative of euthanizing them. If you want to stop the practice we need to call for a ban on all clear containers. As long as there are clear containers people will continue put fish in them lol! j/k

  6. Honestly if i had a bunch of random goldfish i would pack em up and take care of all them for the duration of the event to save a bunch of goldfish. At least I would know that when it is over they would have a good home to go back too and not be passed out to whoever wants one! While it is a horrible practice it will likely never be put to an end. Sadly for lack of a better term most governments "have bigger fish to fry" than to worry about the wellfare of a dozen goldfish. Its sad but its the truth. So to answer your orignal question no I do not find it disquisting IMHO its "genius" as long as the person doing it knows what they are doing and have good intents. If you disagree ask yourself one question would you rather have someone like say Alex or Fang overseeing the whole thing or Uncle Jim and Aunt Betty?

  7. My honest opinion on this take it for what its worth ;)

Nobody sees the problem with having a fish shipped to them from halfway around the world and spending 2 days in a tiny bag stuffed in a dark box and passed from hand to hand on their way to your door but 3 hours in a bowl is animal creality? Really? A bowl sucks for a permanent home but at least it allows some oxygen exchange! As long as you have fish that were born elsewhere but your house they have probably endured some animal cruelty on their way to you. By purchasing your wonderful pets you are actually participating and supporting animal creulity (myself included). Sorry just my take got to look at it from all angles now :)

  8. It really depends on how the fish are treated otherwise. My fish sometimes get to spend a bit of time in bowls while i clean their tanks. 3 days is a bit long though. If someone brought in a group of 30 goldfish and used large bowls and the same ones everytime it would actually SAVE a crap ton of fish. Most people that do the fish in the bowl thing at events just buy feeders and dispose of them when they are done. It may actually be a saving grace in disquise for many goldfish. If the fish are kept in ponds when they are not being used they would probably have very good lives.

  9. I like to use smaller heaters since a stuck on heater will kill your fish faster than a heater that never turns back on. In my experience most stick on and fry fish, unless of course it is a discus tank then it is almost a guarantee it will die in the off position. I think the aquarium heater could quailty as the eighth wonder of the world :krazy:

  10. On a side note i try to avoid glass heaters in general. If you do large water changes like myself and accidently let a glass heater out of the water and it comes on without you noticing it will be disasterous if you refill it with the heater on. I have shattered several heaters over the years that way so now i use heaters made with other materials if possible.

  11. they are decent heaters i have had some for several years with no issues other than sometimes they will not get hot enough. If you are keeping goldies though you will probably have no issues. I have had some that would shut off around 84 and could not get any hotter. Only a problem if you want to keep your fish in the 86-88 range. The aqueon heater i have the same issues with. i remedy it by using a fluval 150w to get the extra 2 to 4 degrees the 300w aqueon wont allow.

  12. I use to work for a tank wholesaler and we had 40b and also 40 reg that are the dimensions he is talking about they are not a true 40 but that is what they were labeled as. For me this question is a nobrainer go with the 40B the added depth is nice. Also stands for a 15" wide tank are not as available as 18" wide stands. They may have a stand for the 15" tank but what is to say you dont want to change the look down the road say for instance you move and the old stand looks cruddy in your new home.

40B it is then!!! Been keeping two 4.5 inch Svr-Ranchus in white tote storage bin, can't wait to put in fish tank so I can view them.

    Can't wait to see pics!

  14. Shipping is outrageous for fish, but if you want nice ones sometimes it is a necessary evil. The average box of fish usually costs me around $80 to have overnighted. I only get my fish 2 day if they are not a fragile and the weather is nice. Discus alway get overnighted or Airport to Airport. I have never had a goldie arrive in the mail but considering they are as messy as they are i would probably recommend paying to overnight them.

Raingarden, because of their location (and probably because to minimize cost) ships all of their goldfish 2-day delivery. In general, they do very well, in large part because Steve puts such great effort into the packaging of fish and box.

I am sure i have shipped fish to hawaii and puerto rico and it is expensive so i usually use the 2 day to ship fish there. It seems that he does not allow more than 4 fish per box. Is that the case or is am i misunderstanding? If you fast the fish a few days before shipping and give them plenty of water it is probably not a huge issue. I just get nervous knowing i have expense fish in the mail and waiting for them :)

  16. I have used a nova extreme but it has been awhile. I can't recall if they had the waterproof endcaps or not? I find it strange that both fixtures do not work. Hopefully you will get it figured out or some replacements soon. With that kind of luck though you may want to switch brands. I would not recommend corallife though I have had everyone except one that i owned burn the ballast out within a year. I have owned 4 and only one is still in use today and the bulb just died the other day so i will have to see if it is in fact the bulb or another ballast. I have not found a good assembled light fixure so i now use retrofits when i want good lighting.

  17. Fang if i were you i would try to get 2-4 more. Angelfish can be kept at greater numbers than goldfish in the same water volume. I would recommend 6-8 in a 55. Knowing how good you are at keeping your fish and doing water changes i would not be afraid to tell you to get more. Honestly you are probably one of the best most caring fish keepers i can think of. I would not hesitate to let any of my fish into your care. :)
