  1. Are you sure the boiling water wouldn't make the paint on the gravel peel?
  2. I definetly noticed a difference when I got a new tank (36 gals) for billy and changed his food to Hikari oranda gold- he grew lots. Previously he was in a 5 gal and on nutrafin flakes. Rolo, my black tele is about 18 months younger than billy, and she is almost as big as him as she has been in a properly sized tank all her life, and had been eating nutritious food all of her life. just goes to show tank size and food play a big part! I would feed them on progold but I have not yet found a place that ships to the uk.
  3. thanks guys, I think I shall boil. when I went to sea pets (small british chain) I saw some ryukins! £30.50 each though for the large ones, so i decided not to. There was a calico one which I would of bought if it wasnt so much money! also I saw a tank full of baby ryukins, about half of them calico. I would of bought one but they were all sick. In the queue to pay, in front of me there was a family with a girl who looked about four. I saw they had bought two of the baby ryukins and had some spongebob decorations. Those poor fish won't last long- doubt they have a large tank Anyway, Thanks guys! PS- the tank literally was bare apart from a manky plant pot, so I bought decs and that came to about £46, so I dedcided not to get any gravel. (sorry the computer has just gone into italics mode and I dont know how to get it off.)
  4. hi everyone! long time no see! I've just come to post about my black (painted) gravel. It has been left outside, unsheltered for the best part of six months as I went barebottom, but now I would like to put it back in the tank. I was wondering how I should go about sterilizing it- or would it be best to buy new gravel? I'm having a trip to lfs today to get some new decorations (tank has been bare except one plant pot- all plants in there died) so hopefully it will look nice and pretty! thanks guys! PS- just realized it has been almost a year since I joined!
  5. grr.... cheked back this morning and looks like Billy and rolo had a tasty feast last night.... ah well, will hopefully spawn sometime again soon! xxx
  6. Hola amigos! long time no see huh? well today i have got some exciting news... Yesterday I noticed eggs in the aquarium! yaaaaay! This proves rolo is a girl (I thought she was a girl cause her bum is an outie) . there are some eggshell bits in the tank where Billy most likely has nommed his own children! I bought a new algae magnet thing, and last night, i noticed some orangey lumps on it, with a few little fragments of eggshell, and a white, unfertilized egg. some of you will know i have a barebottom tank, so there are only about 5 or 6 eggs left, on top of the algae magnet. This is the first time I have ever seen a fishie egg, and they look so cool! like clear orange jelly wiith a black/ grey dot in! I wonder what my telescope x fantail babies will look like- if they survive. bye for now! xxxxx PS I really shouldnt be a stranger! I have been looking round and there are lots of new members
  7. Hi There! I am UK too. are you planning on using this as a permanent home for you oranda? If you are, please get a bigger tank, I am sure that your fish would appreciate it 80 litres you will need for you oranda, not 54 if you are planning on using this as fishie's permanent home. I guess you could use a table/ unit if you are planning on this for a quarantine tank, but If you get an 80 litre+ tank you will need to get a cabinet designed for that tank. (most tank manufacturers make stands fitted to their tank). You need ten times filtration for your tank per hour (for example, If you had a 100 litre tank, you would need a filter that did 1000lph output. The fluval u4 filter does 1000 litres per hour if you are interested). one of the filters I have is called the biobox 2, which does something like 640 lph, and is available from seapets. hope this helps. As Koko said, you could keep one oranda in here, but he would probably appreciate the extra room of an 80 litre tank. PS. I don't know how new you are to fish, so do you know about cycling of a tank? PPS: one US gallon = 3.8 litres
  8. U.K. becks, I did get it from Pets@home. It makes me sad, because theres a entire aisle in my pets at home, with tiny plastic kiddie tanks. I'm guessing they are for goldfish, seeing as young children love them. :'( i see dead goldies floating around in some of the new arrival tanks there. I hate pets at home. I was nine when I got that tank. Also in the leaflet that came with it said that If I put nutrafin cycle and nutrafin aqua plus in and leave for 2-3 days it would be Ok to put fish in. I didnt know a thing about cycling, and considering my first four got a 20% WC once a week, even during the cycle, they lived for a few months which surprised me as They probably would have died in a few days. My first little black tele, 'Raptor' died in the first few days though. When I asked in PAH why that could be, the lady just said "they are very sensitive to water quality". Another thing that happened a few months ago in PAH was (since Billy wasnt growing a wen, and he was 18 months at the time) I asked "why isnt he growing a wen?" as he was sold to me as an oranda. The person serving me said "wens can take years to develop". Billy is definetly a fantail though. Pets At Home annoy me. So Much. PS: Blackteles, thank for the warm welcome back by the way
  9. This site is so amazing. By the way, Golden fishy, I love your siggy. I only just realized that the fish follow your mouse!
  10. i give two pinches every time i feed mine, which is normally once or twice a day. I feed them hikari pellets and sometimes tubifex worms or bloodworms for variety. I prefer not to feed live worms, as they can bring parasites into the water. Hopefully you will learn as much as I did from the helpful members on Koko's Welcome PS: it is perfectly normal to be checking this site every five minutes and wanting to go on as much as you can!
  11. Yes, Billy seems like he enjoys the upgrade, and Rolo was very lucky when I picked her. all the rest of the fish in her tank (they were all goldfish of some sort, probably one of the earliest culls as fish in her tank had eyes and fins missing) have probably ended up in tiny bowls or tanks like the one i used to have billy in. Believe it or not, The leaflet that came with it said I could keep up to four goldfish in it.
  12. Look at this. Billy used to live in a tank the exact same as this, just a few months ago... http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/aquarium-supplies/aquariums/plastic-aquariums/marina-cool-blue-21-litre.html now he's in the same tank as this... http://www.seapets.co.uk/view-image.html?title=Aquatlantis%20Ambiance%2080x40%20Aquarium%20And%20Cabinet%20Light%20Wood&filename=973000-large.jpg[/img] How things have changed, all thanks to Koko's :')
  13. Good Luck! hopefully He'll get better with a little TLC. like the others said- What MASSIVE telescopes for his body size. So cute!!
  14. It's a pretty addictive hobby. A few months ago poor Billy was in a 5 gallon tank. i had a jug to do water changes once a week. I remember getting excited when I first got to siphon lol. My mum even let me keep stinky mushed up carrot, pea, hikari pellets, tubifex, and bloodworm (gel food) in her freezer. That took a little persuading. In fact a lot. The babies loved it though
  15. If you were to put them in a kiddy pool in the back garden, I guess you could fold some chicken wire over the top of the pool? if there is anyone in your neighbourhood with a large goldie pond who would be willing to take them on, that could work
  16. I started a post similar to this: http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/91275-leaky-test-tubes/ And grr! it is annoying! I wish api would give us screw top lids. my nitrate test especially leaks everywhere. Call me a safety freak but If I am not in a rush, I get a resealable sandwich bag and some disposable gloves. It is so annoying that the Nitrate test goes everywhere because in total you have to shake in for a minute and a half! Api, please change the tube tops!!!
  17. Thanks! just filling tank back up now, went as low with the water as I could so Billy's dorsal fin was just about covered. My dad is on board with the need of these never-ending water changes!
  18. I'll try! and also, I will only be able to do WC's in the evening, as it is a hard job doing siphoning on my own (I am only 12!) whilst carrying 10kg buckets and pouring them down the loo. I have to wait til my dad gets in from work. My mum doesn't have much to do with cleaning out the fish Thank you so much for your help guys, it really is greatly recieved
  19. Me and my dad are planning on doing a 75% WC today, and a 50% (maybe a 75 if I can persuade him- he is the one who carries anything from 7-13 10kg buckets up the stairs every time we do a large WC- which is every few days!). I am also going to salt to 0.3% as on this Koko's link http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/Effective%20Quarantining.html (set one) as it says it will help will the healing of physical injury such as scale loss, abrasions etc. Also because salt can have a positive effect on the nitrites. With the healing of the scale loss (set one on the link) will I need to just salt or do all of set one?
  20. Thank you for the replies guys! the tank is a bare bottom (you can see some pics on the KG facebook page) and there are not really any rocks. And yes, the nitrites were at 5ppm at one point
  21. [*]Test Results for the Following: [*]Ammonia Level?0.25 [*]Nitrite Level?1 (will do a WC tonight though, as tank is cycling) [*]Nitrate level? 2.5ppm. On the Api chart it looks halfway between 5ppm and 0 ppm. [*]Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? 8.2 [*]Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)?I reckon it is 7.5. As on the colour chart, the sample is a bit paler than 7.4 on the high range ph test and on the normal ph test, it looks like 7.6. [*]Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? api, freshwater master test kit (drops) [*]Water temperature?75F [*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 36 gallons (140 litres) [*]What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)?Biobox 2 (650litres per hour) [*]How often do you change the water and how much? Since the tank is cycling, it varies. when the test kit says params are not okay, I do WC's. [*]how many days ago was the last water change and how much? monday or tuesday (sorry bad memory), 100% as the nitrite were at 5ppm (no wonder Billy had white poo!) [*]How many fish in the tank and their size? Billy, 4 inches, Rolo 2 inches [*]What kind of water additives or conditioners? api stress coat, (I put in enough for it to work on the slime coat, one squirt (one ml, I have the bottle that is big and had a thing that looks like a soap pump on top)) api stress zyme [*]What do you feed your fish and how often?hikari pellets and sometimes a hikari meal is substituted with bloodworm and tubifex for a bit of variety (I do this 2-3 times a week) Regardless of what sort of food I am feeding them, I feed twice daily and a day a week of fasting. [*]Any new fish added to the tank? no [*]Any medications added to the tank? no [*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? three scales lost on Billy's left side. Rolo is okay though. [*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? no Thank you for any replies!
  22. what about a 100% if I bag up B and R?
  23. In diagnosis and discussion, there was a thread (i think) called something like 'oranda with a squishy belly'. turned out that the oranda was a bit eggy. maybe thats the issue? hope this situation is sorted soon
  24. [*]Test Results for the Following: [*]Ammonia Level?0.25 [*]Nitrite Level? 5!?!?! I will do a WC as soon as dad gets in from work! [*]Nitrate level?0 [*]Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? (using high range ph test) 8.2 [*]Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? [*]Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops?api master test kit /drops [*]Water temperature?73F [*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running?36 gallons/ 140 Litres, three days [*]What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? biobox 2 (650 litres per hour) [*]How often do you change the water and how much? have not changed any yet, but due to the high nitrite readings, I will do one after I have had my dinner [*]how many days ago was the last water change and how much? [*]How many fish in the tank and their size?two, billy my four incher, rolo my two incher [*]What kind of water additives or conditioners? api stress coat [*]What do you feed your fish and how often?twice a day, a pinch of hikari oranda gold mini floating pellets (the only goldfish staple that is not junk availabe in my area- I know I shouldnt feed floating foods) [*]Any new fish added to the tank?no, billy and rolo were introduced at the same time [*]Any medications added to the tank? no [*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus?no [*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? no Billy had gotten over ich recently ( he had been ichless for a week before I let him in the main tank) and he has now gotten white poop.I fed B + R some tetra fresh delica bloodworm in jelly yesterday and their usual hikari pellets today. I know that white poo is a sign of a bacterial infection, but I was just wondering-seeing as Billy had ich recently, is this normal? Rolo's poop is fine though. browny sort of colour.
  25. 'Goldfish are sensitive to the people around them. They like smiling happy people looking into their aquarium. When they look out and see people worrying over bills, pink slips and foreclosure notices they pick up on the stress level. When families are too focused on money, the poor goldfish get neglected, and they can tell.' Really? made me laugh
