  1. I have a red caped oranda and im 90% sure he has an internal bacterial infection. Does anyone have any suggestions on brands or types that they have seen or heard work well? Much thanks to any replies,
  2. So i have a very large red capped oranda. His about 6-7 inch's long and 2-3 inch's wide. His is a 47 gallon on his own. I am doing weekly 25-50% water changes but he produce's sooooo much waste and the water seems to be very cloudy even mid-week. I used to feed him only once daily but have started to feed him twice a day and he eats everything i give him .I was wondering if i could just feed him once a day again as i was before and if that would help reduce the waste or has he gotten too large to get away with that? I dont want to starve if he should be eating twice a day. I just dono cuz im pretty sure he would eat till he exploded cuz his kinda a piggy Any advice or personal experiences with this would really help
  3. very cool and such a pretty fish any more pics from ppl that own this kinda fish
  4. very beautiful pics. I have a 7inch Red Capped Oranda and have upgraded to a 47 g tank. I have been looking into getting him a tank mate and saw this beautiful orange Ryukin ,like the one Valerie has, in the fish store. Looks to be a very healthy fish and at least 5inch. Would 47g be enough space for two fancy goldies if i kept the water clean
  5. What happens if salt is not dissolved before putting in tank
  6. Thanks for your fast replies. I went to the fish store and bought fish clip with suctions to attach so my air stone is now up and working...Angel seemed to really like that. The guy who works there at the store and cares of the fish said it could deff take up to a week for side affects from poor H2O to go down and to just keep an eye on his behavior (eating/swimming) so im trying not to worry too much at this point and just keep a close eye. Its a 47g and i am going to be buying the API drop test tube kit. That's the good kind of water test kit to buy, right? Its a boy..i named hm before i could sex him...kinda goes both ways though and what is the idea level of nitrites to have?
  7. new tank photo's http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j388/Haileykins20/176347_10150102047593876_511408875_6491362_4570563_o.jpg
  8. Thank you both for the fast replies. I had my water tested with the api drop kit at the store (16g)...it was bad....really bad. I have good news though. Angle is in his new tank and the infection on his head is gone also my water in the new tank is great. Here is an overview of the last three weeks and my current concern and question. I also posted this in another forum specifically talking about this type of infection (red pest) but thought it was a good idea to ask here to since it was specific to my fish. He got fin rot from out growing his tank and poor water conditions. He was on melafix and it seemed it help clear it up. Then he got a secondary fungal infection which I had to treat with antibiotics but it seems to have cleared up nicely. I have also upgraded from the 16g to a 47g and he seems much happier. My water is great in the new tank i have checked it three times in the last three days and all the reading are good. His been in the new tank 2 days and his fins are still bloodshot. My thinking was from the poor water condition from the previous tank as i know this can be a side effect. The red streaks look worse with the light off and the base of his fins seems pinkie but he seems happy as can be and is eating and swimming like norm. So my question is how long does is take once water conditions have improved for these red streaks to go away (if poor water from the previous tank was the cause)? And if they do not go away how long should i wait before getting antibiotic food? I would really rather not jump to antibiotics if maybe he just needs more time to adjust. Much thanks to any replies and feedback. recent water conditions of new tank from Feb 28th 12:01am (test strip) Nitrate 0 Nitrite 0 Hardness 150 Chlorine 0 Alkalinity 180 Ph 7.2 Feb 29th at 3pm i went back to my local fish store and got them to use the API drop test kit. I did not get the exacts numbers but they told me my water was great and right at the perfect levels it should be. Thanks again for all the great feed back.
  9. I am new to this site and not a new fish owner but new at proper fish care. 10. Hello Fish Hobbiest. My name is Hailey and this is my red caped oranda gold fish named Angel. I have had Angel for 7 yrs now and only within the last 2 weeks has he been sick. I will be getting the water tested with in the next day or two and will poist is ASAP but if i could get some feedback on this photos and my discription that would be helpfull. [*]Test Results for the Following: [*]Ammonia Level? still to come [*]Nitrite Level? still to come [*]Nitrate level? still to come [*]Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? still to come [*]Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? still to come [*]Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? still to come [*]Water temperature? Room temp but will get more accurette reading soon. [*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 16 Gallons running 7 yrs (getting upgrade to 57 Gallon in a few days) [*]What is the name and size of the filter(s)? older filter and dont honestly know anymore...pics above (got brand new filter that is appropriate size for new 57g tank) [*]How often do you change the water and how much? 25% water change weekley (recently started doing regularly as i did some more reseach on goldfish care) [*]How many fish in the tank and their size? 1 [*]What kind of water additives or conditioners? Currently using API aqarium salt(freshwater tanks) and API MELAFIX antibacterial fish remedy. [*]What do you feed your fish and how often? Hukari fancy fish sinking pelets 3mm. (2nd food i tryed because i had to change cuz the store stoped selling food he orignally ate. angel did not like first food change and wasnt eating but he seems to like this food and is eating. Also i feed him frozen bloodworms on ocasion. [*]Any new fish added to the tank? no. [*]Any medications added to the tank? MELAFIX antibacterial. Did one week of treatment then 25% water change and am on day 2 of second treatment. [*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? 2 weeks ago: noticed slight bloodshot fins, 1 week ago: heavey bloodshot fins, red sores under main "arm" fins and red sore developing on left side at base of tail, body and eye slime. (red sore went away with Melafix treatment, fins also less bloodshot but frayed at ends, and no more body slime), THIS week: white "fuzzy" patch developing on wen, slight bloodshot fins and still frayed but do not look like they are progressing further. [*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? 1.5 weeks ago sitting at top of tank, not a lot of movement, lack of eating. 1 week ago: be haviouse back to norm but lots of resting at bottom of tank. THIS week: behaviour seems norm but every so ofton Angel seems to tweek out and shake his head rapidley. As you can see it has been a very up and down couple weeks. I have had some theory about what is going on but want to leave it bias as u are the experts. I do know that this tank is not big enough for the size my fish has grown and believe this to be a large contributer to everything that been going on. I have been working hard of keeping the tank clean and doing frequent water change's before and after melafix treatment. melafix seemed to help first problems but im worried a secondary infection is happening and am unsure what to do treatment wise or/and am worried that maybe first diagnose's was wrong or will not fully heal if properly diagnosed so i am all around a worried fish owner and needed an outsiders opionion. Im hoping the new large tank once set up will help.
