  1. i was wondering if anyones ever kept shrimp with there bettas? if so was the tank heavily planted? not so heavily planted? how did they get on? did the betta attack or pick at the shrimp ever?

ive got a male betta in a 10 gallon tank and would like jsut a little more life in there perferably shrimps either ghosts, cherry or amanos not sure yet but would like some opinions about it?

    thank you!

  2. ive been gone a while a LONG while but i took my 80 gallon apart and re-sterilized it and re-cycled it (again) and have finally put my 2 feeders back in i must say they are quite happy and have nearly tripled in size since i brought them home about 3 or 4 months ago!

heres marchello the little orange and white common

and betty minnow the bronzy colored common whom i thought looked like a minnow when i first got her

and a short video of them swimming around

  3. I am going to make a separate thread about this, but I also would like to comment here as well.

I think that it's an extremely bad idea to house new fish in your main tank, especially if you are starting things over. The QT serves multiple purposes: 1) observe for sick fish, 2) treat if necessary, and 3) to get rid of all the contaminating pathogens through successive water changes.

All three are equally important, so that by the time you move the fish over to your main tank, you are reasonably assured you are bringing over disease-free fish to the main. If you use the main tank as a QT, then it is entirely possible that whatever bug that had caused problems will linger there for years to come, even after you've successfully treated the fish for the problem.

I really think the best thing to do is once again to decontaminate the big tank, cycle fishlessly, and move these fish over to a QT. I know it's a lot of work, but it will pay off in the long run.

yey.....why the heck didnt i think about the fact that i could pick up another fish with a bacterial "nasty"?? i kept thinking "well if theres any parasite i can treat it and if theres any more bacterial infections i have the metro meds to treat it so ill be ok putting htem all in the main tank since its brand new anyways"

good greif im a moron :thud

well i guess im no stranger to steralizing this big ole' thing

BUT will a common goldy be ok in a 20 gallon for a month or two or more while the big tank cycles i have 2 20 gallons i can set up one will unfortunatly be underfilterd but if i put the smaller of the two goldies in there and do tha obvious daily water changes will it be ok you think then put the larger of the two in the little over filterd tank?

sigh i really do feel like such an @55 right now here i htought i was oh so clever when i think i was really jsut trying to justify getting some new fish...

  4. You should still test your tap water pH just in case. Not using a buffer does NOT mean that your tank and tap pH are the same. The pH can still rise or drop in the tank.

ok i will make sure and do that

I find nitrate of 11 very high. You have only 1.5 inches of goldfish TOTAL in an 80 gallon tank with 100% water changes twice weekly.

I have 20+ inches body length in a 55 gallon tank and my nitrate only goes to 20ppm when I do only one 85% water change weekly.

I think you know where this is going.

normally when the tank is cycled its only at 7 that was the reading before i did the water change.

and uhm...no im not quite sure where thats going  that i should not have fish?

I know that Walmart's fish are not the greatest quality, but interestingly all of the ones I bought and QT properly, still live. You need to pick ones that look very healthy and active, no clamped fins, not being droopy, healthy fins, no injuries etc.

well the only one i was worried about bring home was the black and orange tele as it seemed a bit lathargic buti t had no wounds or nothing and once it was in the tank it went nuts happily swimming every which way so i felt better about it the oranda was active,no clamped fins,no white spots,no missing scales,no torn fins no white fungus or slime or nothing same with the little fan tail very active, and happy.

and im going to set up my 20 gallon QT tank again since these guys have already gone thru a QT so to speak.

  5. well so about a month or so ago i bought 2 fancy goldies from wally world and 2 feeders from a petstore dropped them all in my cycling 80 gallon and treated with salt the feeders are doing great but within a few days both fancies took to the bottom then died well then i got me a bottle of prazipro in the mail and treated with that after i brought home a new little fantail again from wallyworld (i know i know but theres very litte places to get goldies around here!) it was doing nicely and i treated with salt and prazipro for 5 days before it began bottom sitting then died :/

    here are my tank prams:

    • * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)-must be 7.9 cause i dont add any buffers

i know i really shouldnt get wally world fish but like i said fancys are very hard to find in the local petstores ive been looking for a nice fancy for close to a year now from the local stores with nothing i even asked them to order me a calico tele before i had to sterilize my tank think they have yet? NO i dunno perhapes i will jsut stick with these two feeders for the time being they are growing like mad and doing so good.

but can anyone tell me why these fish may have died if if theres anything i should do? (other then the obvious of not buying from wally world anymore) i mean the first 2 i figured alright there were from wally world but then the third to? they were very active when i got them then all of a sudden BAM bottom sitting then BAM dead.
