  1. Thanks tithra, maybe I'll try feeding them just veggies for a few days and just see if it improves at all. Are peas still considered the best bet cleaning them out?

I have a 30g somewhere but I believe that it's just as deep as the 50g. Hmmm. If he was my only I would get him a 20 but I don't wanna do separate tanks for them

  2. Tonight is honestly the first night I've checked the stomach. He was floaty from day one so I just figured it was who he was.

To be completely honest, I haven't been the fish owner I use to be. I change their water consistently but besides that, I got so burnt out from the hobby after losing so many so easily when I was doing my best with them. I actually lost most of

Them after they became sinkers and then eventually caught something secondary. Ever since then... I just too exhausted from constantly monitoring them and over analyzing.

He definitely could be a she. My other one has been chasing him or her around but I thought it could be him getting picked on, especially if he is ill.

Always floaty; pretty much since November when I got him. They only get small sinking pellets

I don't have metro meds anymore.

  3. I'm doing this on my phone and I don't see the form but I'll do my best to remember

    Ammonia: 0

    Nitrites: 0

    Nitrates: 10ish

    Ph: 7.4 tap and tank

55g running for 5 years with 2 fish. Oranda and ranchu. Just the 2 of them for about a year. They get fed sinking pellets every other day. I change the water 25% every other week or more often if my numbers go up but it's a huge tank for 2 small fish so no issues. I have an aqua clear 70 filter.

My tiny ranchu has really had issues from day one. Small little guy that cannot swim well obviously from his swim bladder. He often is floating head down under my plants and when he comes out, is very floaty when he swims... Struggling really. He hasn't grown much at all either. He's been like this for a long time so i know a it's not just a matter of feeding him peas or fasting him so just wondering if there is anything else I can try and do for him.

His tummy is pretty soft. Right between those fins on the very bottom. So i figure infection but since he's been floaty for so long, I assumed he would have died by now if it was an infection. He always looks very bloated too .

    Thanks for any help

  4. :rofl.

I'd still spread it around and make the little ones work for it.

Do you weigh them at all? That really helps me to see who the food hogs are month to month. Also I have taught them all to hand feed so if I feel one isn't getting their fair share, I sneak that one a few extra bites when no one else is looking. :teehee. For me, it's my smallest fish. For you, you could hand feed your big guy. :)

Awww good thinking. I have in the past when I was doing medicated food so maybe I'll help him out for awhile until the other one grows. My big one is such a slow, gentle giant so he isnt very aggressive and obsessed with food in comparison.

  5. Ive never had to worry about how much to feed until now! I have 3 fish but my biggest is a huge oranda who is at least 8 times the size of my baby ranchu. I use to do large pellets but I was nervous they were too big for the baby so i bought small pellets that now seem too small for my oranda. I dont feed very much now because I dont want the little one to over eat and die but I feel bad because the big one doesnt get very much at all. If I feed more, will the little one know when to stop?

The size difference is really insane so Ive never had to deal with this situation but I really am starting to worry that the big one isnt getting enough nutrients!

Such a petty worry but I still want to ask your advice

  6. Well that sounds easy enough! I was afraid it would be one of those every other day, decrease the temp 2 degrees per .623 teaspoons of salt and increase the temp .75 degrees every 4th day based on .73 cups of salt while doing a 25% WC on the odd days and 45% every 5 days. Those ones make my head hurt :madrant

I got some aquarium salt, that isnt a big deal... I just didnt want to spend 50 dollars on a heater just to help clear up the ich for a week. Since having fish, I have been lucky enough to avoid ich, though have had every other disease in the book! I almost gave up fish all together last month but couldnt resist. Got myself a TINY orange ranchu and another red cap oranda! Hope all is going well with everyone else!

  7. Hi Everyone! Its been awhile since I have been on here! I got down to 1 fish last month and caved and got 2 more. I didnt quarantine the new guys (I know, I know!) and now have something "fishy" going on in my tank. I would assume it is Ich since its flecks of white all over the fins. I honestly dont know much about ich because I have never dealt with it but the fish at the store didnt have it and I just noticed it today! And its a ton!

Just want to see what you guys advice for treating it since I am not familiar. Thanks!

  8. He is pretty much not with it. I am just letting nature do its thing. He hasnt eaten at all, been belly up, if I touch him he will just purse his lips for about 5-10 seconds.

I have learned with the last fish I have lost, that no matter how hard I attempt to save them, it isnt natural for them and there is no sense in trying to put them through misery any longer than necessary. And he is definitely more sick than the past ones.

Poor buddy, he is my beautiful dark oranda with big chubby cheeks. I am slowly losing all my fish and it is always my favorite ones that go first. Just have 2 left now. Sigh...

  9. Hi guys, sadly I havent been around since my last issues and now here I am again!

I went home for the weekend and came back to my oranda floating belly up and pineconed. His stomach is also soft. I put him in a 10g plastic bin with an airstone and added epsom salt. I am hand feeding him MM as much as I can. I got him to eat one last night when I got home and he ate 2 more today. Since he isnt eating, I did at metro powder to his water too.

I kind of forgot some of the basics so I just have a couple quick questions.

-How long can he be in epsom?

-Should I try spinach for the floating or is that more or less part of a dying stage?

-Should I attempt to force feed him mushed up MM? They are definitely pretty old I might add

Poor guy doesnt look good so I am not sure if I should order more MM. Hes not eating much, is it worth going out and buying a heater to speed his metabolism up?

Anything else I am missing? I know, I know... I dont have test results but I have been very good with cleaning the water to the point where the water hasnt concerned me at all up until this point. I can buy a test kit tomorrow if necessary but I have been changing his water a lot since moving him into his hospital tank, as much as I have in the past with my other sick fish and tested their water.

As always, thanks for any help

  10. One of my orandas has been spending most of today gulping at the top of the tank. I just moved the tank and the 3 fish across state last friday. Another one has been gulping a little bit but one in particular has spent minutes and minutes just gulping at the top but not moving his body at the same time. I can tell he is just acting very different. No other signs at all.

I will fill this out the best. I didnt bring my test kit and its obviously too late to go get one. And to be honest, I cant afford to go and get another one. BUT. I did just fill their tank last Friday, so 5 days ago with all new, fresh water and brought their cycled media along so I would assume the water is ok.

This past hour or so he has really been up there most the time, just gasping but not moving much. Any ideas? Video shoes him more active than he is now. Right now, its to the point where I am concerned

    Terrible quality, I know

  11. Thanks everyone. It was a pain to do but all is well and they are enjoying being city fish!

Sakura, thanks for the video! I doubt you will see this but if you do, I am curious if you have been to "a world of fish" store since I believe you said you moved where I think you did. I bought one of my favorite little guys there a few years ago and curious if they still have decent fancies. I think the selection was small but they always had cool ones.

  12. Yeah, the pH issue has been a mess. My tap water always was 7.2 and so was my tank until one day I did a typical 80% water change (that use to be my norm, loved having a constant clean tank) and all of a sudden my fish were like free falling and turning around weird in my tank. Sure enough, the pH was a 9. GAH. I bought some Seachem powder that is supposed to make your pH go down and when I tested it, it was going down, but there were some ill effects with the fish. I was discussing it with Alex at one point in a d&d thread and he thought me doing a 10% water change every few days wouldnt hurt and would keep the tank water clean and that is what I have been doing and it has been working great.

I talked to my brother and he said he is willing to go there whenever and do water changes! Woo! Though it does scare me that he is going to goof something up. I am going to have to make a strong list!

Which way the switches go for water to go in/out

DO NOT SUCK UP A FISH

    Same temperature!

    DO NOT OVER FILL

Do not take too much water out

May not seem like a lot to us but an 18 year old brother.... idk....

  13. I know, the pH drives me insane! I wish I could just do a 95% wc like I used to all the time. The new city's pH is 8.3ish from what I have researched which is higher than I had hoped but still way better than 9+ back home. I think I might bribe my little brother to do WC/feedings when I am gone- even pay him to do more than 2... it is just hard to trust an 18 year old boy that doesnt know anything about fish

How often should I feed them? Twice a week?

Oh and I forgot to add... I am not sure about the levels. To be honest, I dont really test my water anymore. I just make sure to do frequent, small amounts because it is the best I could do with the ph issues. I tested it last week and I know ammonia/nitrites were 0 and nitrates were 10-20? Though the water changes have been slacking since I have been busy with the move/ work :(

  14. Agh, dang it, I was really hoping that would work. I really dont think they would be up to doing water changes, but I can try. They are doing soooo much for me already... I havent even asked them to feed them yet.

I might just have to bring them down there the first day but I worry that it isnt going to be very smooth for them with me having to drive 3 hours, meet with the landlord to do paper work and then driving across the city to the place.

I have a couple small plants so I doubt they would help.
