  1. Guess what? My dad stopped by today (he's a Mr. Fix-it type) and he took my filter for the day....and fixed it! WahoO! That other 5 gallon hex is already spoken for (if the guy doesn't pick it up today it's mine, but I have a feeling he is gonna get it!) so it's reeeeally a good thing my dad fixed the filter for the 3 gallon (no 100% water changes once it's cycled...very good news!) I have no idea what he did or what was wrong with it, but the important part is, it's working now. Thanks!!
  2. CFG -- yes, this is my egg-laying female. I did attribute eggs to her behavior, my oranda too (I always suspected she was eggbound and that contributed to her death possibly....didn't have a male at the time.) The thing that is bugging me is now the new tele male is occasionally gulping at surface. Could just be a learned behavior from the tele...I just don't know. I have considered breaking it all down and starting over. I would probably still have to treat her in case it is an internal parasite of some kind. Penelope the oranda's poo when it was that weird white-explosion stuff (when she had eaten nothing white) -- along with the long stringy white poo -- I think is one of the best clues that it might be something weird internally. I mean, it looked like a bomb had gone off that day, with weird white stuff/chunks all over the tank. She had been acting off at the time too. What it means, however -- I have no idea. Really wish I could SEE something obvious to give me a clue. Sakura -- Your Fuu does sound very similar to my tele. I think salt would be a good idea. Maybe just start off at .1% for now until I have a better idea what to do (she is sensitive to salt so I think that may be a safe spot to keep it for now.) I will go higher though if it will help her. I believe I gave her a round of at least MetroMeds when I first got her, I try to do that will all my new fish. I want to say MediGold too but I don't remember for sure. Besides Prazi, that's all I've tried. I would really like to give her something that could eliminate any potential internal baddies since it looks like if there is something going on, it could be fatal (because of what happened to Penelope.) Come to think of it, Penelope may have been floaty a couple of times too. It really seems like they are both having the same, vague symptoms, and now I'm becoming more and more worried about my lav tele. Is the Jungle different than MetroMeds? If so I think I would like to give it a go. I won't rush into it though, until someone tells me it's definitely a good idea. I hate being worried about these guys. I wish I could just KNOW if something what wrong and what it was.

  4. Bear with me here, because I have to give a little back story -- I apologize if this gets too long: I lost my oranda Penelope a little while back. (She didn't come from the best, most reliable source, and came with a host of problems.) I treated her with Prazi & medicated food (a round of MetroMeds and Medigold), and she was really well for a while, though she always had some symptoms that remained that bugged me. She was also very prone to constipation and digestion issues. She would have "poo" sometimes that looked like a white explosion in the tank (???) Other times she had long, stringy poo (this was quite common of her.) I switched her to gel food and tried to help it as much as I could, but it was always there no matter what I did. She went through a period of gasping at the surface (in the beginning and it resolved itself.) Wnen she passed, her anal vent had become very large and swollen and painful looking. One day she got really bad and looked like she was dying so I euthanized her so she didn't have to suffer anymore. What is worrying me is my lav tele is showing a few of these symptoms now. She has been having a lot of long, stringy white poo lately. I fed peas yesterday because she was floaty for the first time since I had her. This morning there was a "pea poo explosion" in the tank. She has always been a gasper (well, since I got her.) The person who I got her from said she didn't gasp before. I recently did a Prazi treatment on the tank. I am worried that maybe Penelope had something that passed to my lav tele. She is showing some of the same symptoms, and they are just vague enough to leave me guessing. She has also been bottom sitting more than usual (she never did this before, but when I got the new guy, he is a bottom rester, and she started doing it too.) I was hoping it was just a new learned behaviod, but I can't help but worry because of the other symptoms. My question is: is there anything else I can do as a prevention to kill any potential parasites? I'm not even totally convinced I have a problem, but I just want to do anything I can (safely) to make sure she is healthy. Another thing that is worrying me, is my new tele has started occasionally gasping. I am so frustrated because I don't know what to do, or if anything is even happening! If something was wrong with Penelope, she never showed any obvious symptoms other than the ones I've mentioned. Is there anything I can/should do here?
  5. Beautiful tank and even more beautiful fish (love the buddha theme, I'm thinking of getting one for my little guy!) He looks SO happy in there!
  6. CFG, I know what you are saying about his being lonely if I have to separate. Maybe I can keep him in a completely separate clear container within the fry tank so he can see all his brothers and sisters...I wouldn't want him to be sad/stressed and then get worse. I have one little fry right now that is breaking my heart. She seems to have overfilled her air bladder possibly, and has been stuck on the top for about 3 days now. I've had this happen to other fry a couple of times, but they straightened right out in a few hours. She keeps struggling, and I keep waiting for her to right herself, but it's just not happening. I think I may have to euthanize her today if she's not better. I know she hasn't eaten in days so she might not make it either way. Just feel so bad for the poor baby.
  7. Thanks for responding I have never dealt with ich, so I have no idea if that's what it is? I want to say no, but I'm not sure. It's so, so tiny...both the fry and the bump (I would need a better camera than I have to show it on a photo.) Not sure if it is an injury...the fry is just so small, it's hard to tell. I actually needed a flashlight and had to look very closely to see that it was indeed a bump. I guess I will keep an eye out today, and hope that it just goes away. I really hope it's not something that can affect the whole bunch. I just yesterday (before noticing) adding a younger set of fry to the older ones (doh!) so if it's ich, I am in trouble. Thanks!
  8. Ha!! Don't think that I didn't consider it.... Okay, fine, I won't be in denial....I will probably get another one! Too funny!!
  9. So my too-good-to-be-true Eclipse 3 gallon tank was just that....too good to be true! It seems the filter stopped working today? Not sure if I am doing something wrong (have no experience with these but I didn't do anything different than yesterday and it was working fine until the water change today.) Now when I plug it in, it makes noise but does not operate. Anyone have any suggestions? Actually just found a 5 gallon hex Eclipse on Craigslist, if still available I am going to pick up tomorrow. Hopefully will have better luck with that one! Plus, it will be the size I really wanted. Not too bummed about the 3 gallon actually, I can still use it, just won't be able to cycle it if I can't get it to work (light still works and everything.) I really want a cycled betta tank (not really too into 100% changes at the moment), but it will be good just to have it lying around. Thanks!
  10. It looks like one of the fry (one of the biggest & healthiest ones actually) has a small white bump on his tail. It's towards the tip on one side. Doesn't seem to be any unusual behavior in that fry...and none of the others that I could see have anything similar. Should I remove the one with the bump to a separate tank? Should I try salting the tank? It is almost cycled, but I do get slight ammonia readings sometimes (but no more than .25.) The tank (maybe 10-15 gallons) gets 3 gallons of water changed along with a thorough vacuum with airline tubing daily, and has a sponge filter. I am a little worried about disturbing the delicate cycle with salt, which is why I haven't added any. Any advice as to what I should do, if anything?
  11. Awwwww could he/she be any cuter?? (Answer: NO! )
  12. Makes a lot of sense to me, it seems like there is nowhere a good amount of good bacteria could grow. The canister should really help. Was he testing the water, and if so, what kind of readings was he getting? ALso, aren't undergravel filters not the best at keeping the tank clean? Maybe bad filtration was adding to the problem as well, and a buildup of bad bacteria since the water probably wasn't as clean as it could be. I think the canister could really help in several ways.
  13. Sakura -- I think our girls are definitely sisters! How cool is that?!? My girl has the same weird eyes with really small pupils....she is blind as a bat (well, not really, since bats see quite well, but you get my drift... ) My girl is super mellow too...and gets startled sometimes as well. I'd be willing to bet they are sisters, esp. since you say yours has some chocolate on her. Awesome!! I am actually really hoping for an all lavender tele just like yours in the batch of fry..it might be a long shot but I'd love it if it did happen! Wow, those plants look real, they are sooo pretty, I love them. Poor Momo! And her name was Isis, then I thought she was a boy so named her after Hugo from LOST...pretty obvious by now she is female, and she is yet unnamed...though I was thinking of naming her Eiko (Japanese, thought it sounded cool) and naming her tankmate/soulmate Ryuu (means "dragon spirit" and he has dragon eyes.)
  14. SO beautiful!! I love your tank...and especially the fish in it! I think your Isis may be related to my lav tele girl (sisters maybe?) They came from the same place, and they have the same body type and general look. I was actually going to name my girl Isis too (no kidding -- after one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs "Isis" -- I couldn't believe when you gave her that name!) What are those plants floating on the top? I've been wanting something exactly like that for my tank forEVER....are they real?
  15. The only thing that really gets me stirred up is the mistreatment of defenseless animals. The bettas in pet shops truly have horrible existences. You are so torn because you want to help them, yet you don't want to support the shop that mistreated them in the first place. Hopefully one day animals will be given the consideration and treatment they deserve...and people will stop treating them like unfeeling, unaware, unliving creatures.
  16. Ryukin Girl....Kazue thanks you for salvaging the little dignity and masculinity he has left. I can't wait until he gets a chance to be healthy and grow up -- I think he still has a lot of "blossoming" to do! EDIT: Darn!! I just realized that Kazue was on the list I made of female names I liked as well as Haruko (must've gotten them mixed up with male names somehow.) Oh well...maybe I will try to find another. I really liked that one though. Shellbell4ever....thank you! I am a very proud mama. I don't really think his tininess comes through in the pics...his whole body is about the size of half of one of my butterflies tails! That rock in the pic with the plants on it in his tank is about the size of my hand. He is so itty bitty. He is coming out of his shell now, and greets me whenever I come to the tank. I feed him soaked tropical micro pellets for now (had a free sample and he LOVES them) with a pipette and he rushes it whenever I stick it in the tank. I really, really like him and his personality....he is a mellow, harmonious little guy (Kazue fits him quite well.) I tend to get out of hand with bettas, and I already feel the urge to get another...they are just such cool, relaxing, interactive little things. I really, REALLY can't take on another tank now though with all those goldie fry so I won't...I hope!!
  17. I would report them if I were you Sakura. Seriously, that's animal abuse. I sure would!! Let them act superior...they would have no idea who they were messing with. Getting steamed up over here....
  18. What gorgeous coloring....they are really beautiful!!
  19. Not sure what it is but I just wanted to tell you to hang in there and I hope your little guy is okay
  20. I did? Great!! What did I say? Hopefully I will figure something out! If not.....free butterfly tele babies for everyone on Koko's!!
  21. I soo hope that this is finally resolved, I know you are doing all you can times 100 to see that it is. I will be following this thread and pulling for Bandit until he is better! That is soooo encouraging about the plasma egg possibility....just so great to see the progress Wishing you continued luck with him...if anyone can get through this, it's Bandit!!
  22. to his "manly" iridescent fairy wings!!! You guys just made me feel really good..thank you! I am glad you think he looks happy... I have a little confession to make, I drove over 45 mins each way to get that tank...but I am really glad I did! I really wanted him to be able to spread his cute little fairy wings and be comfy.
  23. Aww I would love for you to have them! I doubt they would make it in the mail (they'd probably hatch -- they always seem to hatch in 2 days which is quick!) The offer stands though for anyone close to central NJ who might be interested!
  24. Right?!?! I couldn't believe they were at it again this morning.... She should be out of eggs soon, right?......right?
