  1. hey guys. here is a really cool find on how fish go about eating. via some generic techniques and some of other various techniques. really cool in my opinion. Its funny to think that fish eat like this.
  2. make it a shrimp or betta tank! or both. lol . I had tons of fun setting up nanos. Get some soil, some live plants, PC lighting and presto! maybe be fancy and get some co2 running
  3. Hey everyone. Its been a very long time since I have started a new thread, but I have been on this site for a few years, as well as other well known sites. anyway, I have had goldfish in the past that eventually get a swim bladder issue, that cannot be resolved, and they stay upside down.. but I found this interesting.. errm, fix? Now I hope this is in the right place, but anyway. check it out ! http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4900048/upside-down-fish-gets-life-jacket.html the owner says the goldfish seems to be fine.

    DIY CO2

haha i remember leaving a solution sit for a while. it smelled like some "fine" wine.

    DIY CO2

i actually have this same set tup. but i keep on using bad mix ratio, so i will try your mix ingredients and see how it does. thanks for posting
  6. im totally going to follow this. very very curious. glad to see people are experimenting.
  7. i have usually noticed that a lot of companies like to advertise how amazing their bioballs (no not a joke XD) are, and their surface area etc. I wouldnt mind going DIY filter floss etc, but i dunno about DIY bioballs. still, its some crafty thinking
  8. id like to see a pic of this. sounds interesting :s never heard of such a "mutation"
  9. peas i tried for about 3 days. with some fasting. i tried 1 week fast, even pushed it to 2 weeks once, but nothing.
  10. thanks for the quick reply! and i tried aquarisol * i beleive thats what its called, its a mild med, which treats a bunch of stuff.. including that. also tried fasting, and peas as well. bunch of water changes as well. nothing. so, my only hope is that the salt will do stuff.. does the salt dissolve? or does it just sit in the tank? what if they eat it?
  11. i remember reading on how to dose GF but that was many months ago and now trying to find the old threads.. i cant. so quick thing, im trying to heal a black moore with a swim bladdder problem.. been like this for months and i have tried other ways of curing it.. but no luck. he refuses to give up, and all i havent tried is salt.. it may be late, but i at least want to try. so what is the ratio.. like how many tea/table spoons of aquarium salt per gallon? do i dose once every weekly water change?
  12. looks great, though all those really tall plants, id plant em in the background, then set up the mid ground and forground plants for a better look. usually how i set up my tanks. though there is tons of green and flourishing plants. looks great i really need to update kokos with some of my tank shots.
  13. i have never found algae a real issue... except bearded algae...!!!! but if anything, put blinds or something on the window. my 55 is near a window and so algae started developing but after closing them more often, watching my lighting hrs, .. and realizing that i lacked in carbon ( so i bought flourish excel) the algae started going away. so if anything, if you do get too much, water changes plus carbon is always nice just watch out though if you do do that. because if you dont have a bunch of plants like i do, then the carbon can OD the fish. or UV helps too . i think they get pricey though depending how much you need for your tank.
  14. great stuff! i has tons of plants in my tank.. though i also have bearded algae as well..
  15. hey everyone, its been a while but anyways. here i am . so ! my tank has been under .. a bit of an attack of black bearded algae, i have had it for a few months, and its hoorrible. Ever since i upgraded my lights, and skipped one water change ( mom made me.. "save water" ) and now here i am.. D: i have tried shortening the amount of light the tank gets, i have tried buying Siamese fish but they are nowhere near full grown so they arent eating it. and so now my resort is co2. because apparently co2 helps reduce algae. so, yesterday i went to my lfs and there was tons of discussion on whats the best to do. And what we concluded on, should be the first step is to try on of these two things. it was to try dosing of Flourish Excel, liquid carbon, cheap, and well its still a good supply. My power filter carbon cartridges are way out, i dont really replace them, due to the collection of BBs. Anyways, so liquid carbon, a cheap alternative to co2. option 2. blanket out the tank. so cover it with blankets, for a week, no light, and the algae should die, and hopefully not the plants. so its one of the two. I also thought about co2 system. unfortunately, after 40 gallons, it can get a lot more expensive.. and i have a 55 gallon. fluval has this http://www.bigalsonline.ca/Fish_Plant-Care_CO2-Systems-Equipment_Mini-Pressurized-20-g-CO2-Kit_11090177_102.html?tc=fish they have a 88g version, which should treat up to 40 gals though i am short here 15 gallons.. well, add substrate and you got less . there is also this, http://www.bigalsonline.ca/Fish_Plant-Care_CO2-Systems-Equipment_CO2-Bio-Generator_8431105_102.html?tc=fish same issue as the other one.. though refills will cost a lot less. 15 bucks. thr fluval refills are like 60 for 4. and i can also make my own mix instead of using the red sea refills. then finally, there is this http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/diy/115850-paintball-co2-injection-diy-setup-tons.html seems like a great DIY rig. very legit looking, though how much would a 24 oz of co2 last me? this is prob. one of the most expensive rigs out of the three, and the larger set up. so waht do you guys think? because i was also thinking, if i go lets say for the red sea alternative.. i can use that and flourish excel? .. i duunno. i really hope i worded this well, and it didnt sound like a big mess.. thanks
  16. looks great i got a heavily planted 55 gallon though i have been fighting bearded algae for months!
  17. i had medium size ish.. used a bubble bar. but i got rid of it.. too much.. something. i forget what it promotes. algae i think. but, im glad i dont have it now. more room for plants!
  18. alright thanks! i hope that i can maybe get one or a pair tom. and see how it goes, even if they dont work, i like botom feeders. alright thanks! i shall boil the drift wood at least, as bleaching sounds scary still to me. and yeah, it seems like this algae just wont go away! hopefully i can tighten the leash on this as its getting out of control. i just want to buy a bunch of new plant and ditch the bad ones! even though that may not do much ..XD
  19. so if i buy a YOUNG Bn (bristle nose? or bushy nose? or is it the same thing ) pleco, wil it eat it? and i hope your not getting confused with the algaes here as well, cus i have only heard of two fish that eat it. so if i am right.. one cup lets say is 500 ml, of bleach, and 500ml x 19 of water ? how long should it be in water? and what about drift wood?
  20. hmm.. the tank has always been happy before the issue. which was well, skipping a water change. i have cut down the amount of hrs a lot on the tank, so that the algae doesnt thrive on the lighting as much as it did before, but this is some tough one for sure.. just our of curiosity. how do you bleach plants?
  21. i dont have hair algae though, bearded algae. all the bottom feeders.. and my now missing pair of otto cats would hands down eat hair algae, which is soft, but not bearded algae.. not to sure if youre confused or i am but anyways it looks like this which is not hairalgae which is http://www.google.ca/images?hl=en&q=hair%20algae&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1920&bih=955 which i dont mind.
  22. i have a rubber nose pleco.. does nothing at all, chinese algae eater i own, and i know those dont eat it, i have a red claw shrimp, .. meh, sort of touches it, and snails. they dont do anything. also have a banjo cat.. those hands down dont do anything XD
  23. wrote about this before a few months back.. i basically just cant get rid of it! otto cats. well had em for a bit but they eventually died off. hard fish to take care of. anyways, i know you can bleach plants, but that just scares me straight up..D: and i know the flag fish and the Siamese algae eater are the only 2 fish which eat this type of algae but my lfs hasnt had them in months! .. waht do i do! i have stripped so many leaves, and its just making my tank look bare. i was reading up here http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/algae.htm and they said the common pleco.. now, yes common pleco, i know they grow to like 100000000000000000000000000 feet, and i had one for quite some time, but it died mysteriously, without any signs of its cause of death. i also owned it before this algae outbreak, which btw happened months ago when my mom is like skip a water change! too much wasted water.. and of course, i just HAD to listen.. anyways, yes this article says they eat it.. but i dont believe it! can anyone confirm this? not to mention, it would get big eventually, and/or get stunned.
  24. haha thats so cool! such a crafty idea! though knowing me i would probably want both great stuff
  25. i never had an issue with tetra whisper power filters
