  1. I would just like to say thank you to everyone who helped me out with Flo! She's made a full recovery and seems to be even more active than she was before she came down with dropsy. I've got her in the same 10 gal tank that she's been in since she became sick because I'm still slowly backing off of salt and I'm able to keep the temperature much higher. Most other places I looked for help said that once the scales pineconed there was really no chance of saving the fish but by being very careful I was able to save her. Thanks so much for the support!
  2. I live in southern california too and my fish are fine in the summer at 76-78 degrees but I get a huge temperature drop in the winter and it comes on really suddenly. Your fish will be fine but I'd really keep an eye on the temp because goldfish are really sensitive to big and sudden temp changes. That's just how it is where I live in San Diego anyways. I have to use a heater so I can regulate the drop better and slowly get them used to the colder temp.
  3. Well I'm having my little sister do all water changes and param checks so hopefully she's giving me accurate info. Ammonia- ranges from 0 to .5; she does two 50% water changes each day to combat this Nitrite- hasn't been showing up but might be in the tank; she's testing again tonight because she said something went wrong last time she tested Nitrate- none The pH has always been pretty stable at 7.6 and I keep the temperature at 78 degrees. Good news! Metromeds arrived in the mail today! She's been getting a few anti-bacteria jungle meds pellets three times a day so should I keep that up but substitute metromeds? She's done with the maracyn 2 and today I'm not adding any meds to her tank. Tomorrow I will start with 5 days of maracyn.
  4. Okay I'll be sure to add some ammonia chips. Metromeds should arrive tomorrow but Flo's condition has already improved considerably. She's even more active and the swelling looks to have gone some. Thanks for the advice!
  5. I ordered metromeds yesterday and yes I've isolated her. I've been using 1/4tsp epsom salt for the 10 gal hospital tank. I've also added a heater and the temp hovers between 76 and 78 degrees. My lfs was sold out of good heaters that would fit the tank so for now I'm stuck with one that's not so great. I've been away at college for the past three weeks. My mom told me this fish was hiding a lot but eating normally and she didn't recognize the signs of dropsy so I don't know exactly how long it's been going on. The 60 gal tank Flo was in got regular 30% water changes once a week. I left my camera at school so I don't think I can get a pic. Basically she is very swollen and her scales are very raised. One looks like it's about to fall off. Her fins are very torn up and I know her tankmates aren't responsible for that. Until the metromeds get her I've been feeding her this other anti-bacterial food I have. She still has a pretty strong appetite but she looks like she's in really horrible condition. The 10 gal tank she's in now has a 150 gph aquaclear filter running that i've attempted to seed with a filter from my established tank but so far there is still lots of ammonia in the tank so I'm going to try and seed it better tomorrow. Because of the ammonia, I've been doing 50% water changes twice a day. I've use Prime to help with the ammonia. I replace the epsom salt that I take out afterwards. I've started treating her with maracyn 2. When I do water changes do I need to replace all of the maracyn 2 i've taken out? Does maracyn 2 only stay active for 24 hours or does it build up in the tank?
  6. I hate to ask again but please if anyone knows what a good treatment would be I would really appreciate your advice. Also, the initial water conditions that I reported were inaccurate. I was relying upon a water test that the person taking care of my fish performed and for some reason she got really off results. The real levels were 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 10 nitrate. I haven't added anything new to the tank in over a month so I don't know how my fish picked up the bacteria. Also, her fins are very ragged and it's difficult to say but I think there are some bloody streaks in them as well.
  7. [*]Test Results for the Following: [*]Ammonia Level? .25 [*]Nitrite Level? .25 [*]Nitrate level? 0 [*]Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? 7.6 [*]Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? 7.6 [*]Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? api drops [*]Water temperature? 72 [*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 60 gal; running 2 months [*]What is the name and size of the filter(s)? 1 penguin biowheel ex350; 1 tetra ex70 [*]How often do you change the water and how much? 30% once per week [*]How many fish in the tank and their size? 2 four inch gf, 1 two inch gf, 1 cory [*]What kind of water additives or conditioners? top fin conditioner [*]What do you feed your fish and how often? gel food x2 per day [*]Any new fish added to the tank? no [*]Any medications added to the tank? no [*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? slightly raised [*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? So I left my fish to go to college a few weeks ago and upon getting back I find that my telescope-eye is not in the best condition. Also, my tank seems to no longer be cycled somehow, because nitrites are showing up. My sick fish has slightly raised scales, making me worry that she's suffering from dropsy. She swims very slowly and seems more to "float" around the tank. Her tankmates seem fine. If I'm going to treat her, I need to do so fast because I leave to go back to school in a few days. Please help! I have no experience with dropsy.
  8. I want a ranchu so bad! I'm jealous. Your ranchu is so cute
  9. I wish my pearlscale was that big!
  10. One of my fry (Ramen) has a tail that looks EXACTLY like that. He's about six months old and hasn't grown to even half the size of his siblings. Ramen can't swim as fast so I have to take extra care to make sure he gets his fair share of food. Good luck with your new fish He/She looks lovely!
  11. What an impressive wen on that black oranda!
  12. Very nice fish! You will love it here!
  13. what types of fish can african dwarf frogs be housed with?
  14. I was considering getting a ten gallon for my dorm and wanted to get a locked tank but didn't know if it would be possible. Thanks for the awesome tips Amber. I think I'll probably be looking for a setup similar to that of your cousin very soon! I would be way too scared to put my fish in a situation where drunk college kids could mess with my tank and add unsavory things to it but the locks seem like a good solution.
  15. I just hand feed my calico telescope eye gf now and she eats wayyy more. I personally think handfeeding is really fun haha Have you hand fed before?
  16. Yeah I'll just rely on pics and possibly I can get my sister to drag her computer over to the tank for a videochat haha sounds extreme but I already miss them. Thanks for the support guys!
  17. Tomorrow I depart for college. I have to entrust my mom with the care of my goldfish. I cried while feeding them today and then felt stupid for crying aghhh I just wish I didn't have to deal with leaving them. Their health has been a bit off lately since I switched tanks so I'm nervous about not being around to make sure everything is okay. About a week ago all these nitrites showed up even though I thought my tank was already cycled and I freaked out but luckily things seems like they're back to normal. I really will miss my five month old baby fish. They grow so fast and I don't want to miss out on anything! I'm allowed to bring up to a ten gallon aquarium for my dorm but I don't want to move up my babies because they're still so little and fragile and I'd be scared they wouldn't make it. Plus I'd be scared someone would mess with their tank. I wish I could just take up the smaller two (out of four) because they have a harder time getting food (one's just really small and the other has a slightly deformed tail). At least I'll have kokos to turn to when I miss goldfish.. Maybe I could set up a new small tank with tetras or guppies. I don't think it would be the same though.
  18. Well we got the tank all set up yesterday and today purchased 3 black skirt tetras to start out with I think that down the road my friend wants to add some neon tetras and maybe a cory. I'm so jealous you have a baby cory lclayton! I have a cory in my goldfish tank and I adore him. I didn't know that about keeping them in groups. Do you think if I added some friends for him that they would mess with my goldfish?
  19. So creative! I really like it and the awesome action shots of your fish!
  20. Oh I'm sorry it didn't work out I put a pearlscale in my big tank and he's a third of the size of my oranda but they really like each other and hang out all the time haha funny how that worked out. Good luck with squirt! I'm sure he'll be big enough soon.
  21. Oh I like black skirt tetras and I know for sure my lfs stocks them so that's good. I know guppies can breed like crazy so I will probably just add males. Do the males get territorial or aggressive with no girls around? Or maybe they'd be less so agh I really don't know much about tropicals. I know when you get a new goldie you've gotta salt and prazi him so do you do this with tropicals as well? Thank you for all your help Chrissy! I really appreciate it! -Wynne
  22. Oo I love the coloring on Marley! You have beautiful fish! I've never had moss balls but they sound like a cool idea. I used to fill my tank with ornaments but the algae was a pain for me too. And I got rid of my hollow ornaments after learning about how potentially dangerous they can be. Post more pics once you've decorated!
  23. I've only kept goldfish so I'm not too familiar with tropical fish. I'm helping my friend set up a 20 gal and I was wondering if anyone could recommend some hardier fish to cycle the tank with. She wants to have lots of smaller fish as opposed to a few big guys and doesn't want them to be aggressive. Any suggestions? And anything specific I should know about tropical tanks as opposed to goldfish tanks other than temperature?
