Hi guys, I am a returning member of this website from over two years ago. It's wonderful that you are still here and I greatly appreciate your help. The 2" oranda in question has already passed, but I am concerned for the other carefully chosen and seemingly healthy tankmates he was with.
These are the stats.
[*]Ammonia Level? (0)
[*]Nitrite Level? (0)
[*]Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? 6.7-7.0 (Sometimes my family relies on rainwater for short periods)
[*]Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)?6.7-7.0
[*]Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API
[*]Water temperature? 60-70
[*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 29g been running with the same fish for 3 months.
[*]What is the name and size of the filter(s)? Penguin Biowheel (That contains two Rite Size E cartridges), and an under gravel filter with 1400 Powerheads in both corners. I keep the filter plate very clean underneath as I know they can harbor waste.
[*]How often do you change the water and how much? 50% Every three weeks. I'll admit sometimes I'm bad and take a little over half. That's something I could definitely work on not doing.
[*]How many fish in the tank and their size? 2 now, 2" Ryukin and a 2" Telescope.
[*]What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime and occasionally stress coat. I was keeping copper in my tank for a long time, but then tried to do a planted tank which was eaten and I never picked back up with the copper. I considered all the fish I had to have been 'quarentined' and free of illness by this point.
[*]What do you feed your fish and how often? OSI Flake Daily, Frozen Bloodworms or Brineshrimp probably three times a week and every once in a while I skip feeding completely for the day.
[*]Any new fish added to the tank? The last goldfish was a panda butterfly telescope which I had watched at the LFS for two weeks before adding to my collection. The Ryukin and Telescope are doing wonderful still.
[*]Any medications added to the tank? When I first got the tank the first goldfish was a small pearlscale. I tried to medicate it with furazone to cure the fungus on it's fins. It died a few days after beginning medicating.
[*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus?
Ok, so this little fella was a 'creamsickle' oranda when I first got him and he had perfect conformation for headgrowth, fins, belly, etc, but within the last two weeks of his life he went through some rapid color change. At this point he didn't seem sick. The new 'black' was on his fins, and part of his belly. It didn't look irritated or anything, and I hadn't had ammonia in my tank in at least two months. Parts of his white turned gold too.
[*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.?
Over a three day span of me noticing his tail beginning to fringe and fray he ended up passing. Day two he had what seemed like follicles of his fin exposed (if the fin had bones etc). He only stayed at the top and sometimes behind the biowheel spout where it pours back in the tank. He still ate. I came here to register real quick and double check my readings of all my goldfish books to see what it might be, but I couldn't get on here fast enough. The only thing I could understand I was to do was to start with a 3% dose of salt over 24 hrs. I did this and by day three he was listless and completely lost all control of his little body except breathing. At this point I euthanized him. He was on his way out.
Do you think disease? The other goldfish are eating wonderful and look great. It doesn't look like fin rot like I've seen where there is some white-ness to the edge. This almost makes me think maybe the telescope was picking on him??? Thanks for all your help!
