  1. My advice, listen to the Mods. I know that other members input can be valuable and just as important but if a Mod is going in another direction with treatment I would follow them. This is an open forum, but we have Mods for a reason. I really hope that all of the comments (correct or jumping the gun) come from a place of kindness and wanting to help each other in a time of need and not just to sound smart or 'right'. I also think the search function can be an important tool; you can look up similar posts, and even past posts from members that can shed light on the type of experience the member (actually) has.

Here is the MSDS sheet for PP. http://www.sciencela...?msdsId=9927406

so I'm reading over your link and find out that you don't want to get pp on your skin... blink.gif I have had stained fingers in the past from disinfecting my equipment!! krazy.gifkrazy.gifkrazy.gif And I didn't get any medical treatment for it! Maybe the exposure is why I'm so forgetful?? spit.gif

but back to the important matter,

nights are always the scariest with a sick fish :(

I definitely know how that feels. k055.gif Hang in there, we're rooting for you and Squishface! gudluksn.gif

  2. Hi, I really appreciate the help.

I have an underground filter and a filter that hangs on the back of the tank. Is this good enough. Do I still need to change all of the water???

    Chris

what are the models of the filters and the respective gallons per hour?

  3. Hi

I am new to the forum...That said I need help with my 50 gal tank. I had a fully cycled tank and then made the mistake of clean about 8 inches of the gravel with the water change (about 10 gal). at about day 10 of the newly cycled tank. It put the tank in a terrible down fall. My amonia and and nitrites have gone thru the roof. I put my fish outside in the pond so they are Ok. The water has now cleared up (looking good) but the tank is still toxic. What now? Do I just wait for it to cycle again or is there something else that I can do.

With your water change did you use a python, or a siphon? When dealing with gravel, the best option is to remove the fish before getting in there with the python/siphon because it will bring to the surface all of the muck and gunk that's been trapped in and under the gravel. Do you have bio media in your filter? And if so, how much? What happens with gravel in the tank is that both the good and bad bacteria can live there. Primarily the good bacteria will live in your filter but if there isn't enough bio media they will also live in the gravel. While changing the water and cleaning through the gravel both sets of bacteria get knocked from their places on the gravel and move throughout the water.

About your ammonia and nitrites rising, I would suspect it's from the good bacteria (bb's) being displaced from it's place on the gravel. Give the bb's some time to find their way back home in the gravel.

If this were my tank I would add more bio media to my filter for the good bacteria to multiply in. And I would also have a barebottom tank. But that is just from my experience and I'm not telling you that you must do that. If you have a gravel bottom you should really think of removing the fish before cleaning to keep them safe. It's great that you have a pond, so it seems like moving them could be an easy option for you for cleanings. But do give adding more bio media some thought, it can't hurt anything!

  4. Hi Martha. I'm Alex. How are you? The method for HP dip I use is from Ken Fischer of Dandy Orandas, who has been doing that way on thousands of fish over the years. He tells me that it's an excellent way of getting rid of gill flukes and other external parasites. I've also researched this, and at the concentration used, is very safe. I'm happy to show you some of this literature. I've also had personal experience with this, and it is a good method. :)

  5. Wal l ma rt has no business selling fish. There are some old threads around here where people managed to get their local 'marts to stop selling fish. I wish the ones in my area would. Just the other week I had spoken to the manager about the sick and dying goldfish, however he didn't seem to care very much and I sincerely doubt they would do anything to save the fish even though I spent the time explaining to him what he can do to either try and save the fish or to euthanize them humanely. It makes my blood boil to see animals suffering needlessly like this.

  6. Ashley needs some help w/ her tank and fish. She has lost Bjorn, Stardew, and Pamby. Bjorn died first a few months ago. Stardew and Pamby just passed away.

Also her two comets, Winnie and Lloyd, are in their own tank and are doing just fine.
