  1. With your water change did you use a python, or a siphon? When dealing with gravel, the best option is to remove the fish before getting in there with the python/siphon because it will bring to the surface all of the muck and gunk that's been trapped in and under the gravel. Do you have bio media in your filter? And if so, how much? What happens with gravel in the tank is that both the good and bad bacteria can live there. Primarily the good bacteria will live in your filter but if there isn't enough bio media they will also live in the gravel. While changing the water and cleaning through the gravel both sets of bacteria get knocked from their places on the gravel and move throughout the water. About your ammonia and nitrites rising, I would suspect it's from the good bacteria (bb's) being displaced from it's place on the gravel. Give the bb's some time to find their way back home in the gravel. If this were my tank I would add more bio media to my filter for the good bacteria to multiply in. And I would also have a barebottom tank. But that is just from my experience and I'm not telling you that you must do that. If you have a gravel bottom you should really think of removing the fish before cleaning to keep them safe. It's great that you have a pond, so it seems like moving them could be an easy option for you for cleanings. But do give adding more bio media some thought, it can't hurt anything!
  2. on your : can I squeeze 'em?
  3. Wal l ma rt has no business selling fish. There are some old threads around here where people managed to get their local 'marts to stop selling fish. I wish the ones in my area would. Just the other week I had spoken to the manager about the sick and dying goldfish, however he didn't seem to care very much and I sincerely doubt they would do anything to save the fish even though I spent the time explaining to him what he can do to either try and save the fish or to euthanize them humanely. It makes my blood boil to see animals suffering needlessly like this.
  4. I've used hp to dab, never dip. I suppose that is up to you to decide but I would be warry about getting it anywhere near the gills. Good luck.
  5. OOOOO~ MY GOSH I need one! omg omg omg I need one of these!!
  6. just texted u but I think u should stick w/ the xp and not use the aquaclear. the only reason ppl were asking if u had an extra filter was to add more gph to the 55.
  7. I spoke to Ash earlier and Mamby is gone. Now it is just Rowan.
  8. thanks Dennis for stopping by! I'm not sure how often the w/c are but I know she has done a couple fairly recently. She vacuums the gravel with every w/c. She just said that Rowans eyes have white dot in the middle of both eyes.
  9. Ashley needs some help w/ her tank and fish. She has lost Bjorn, Stardew, and Pamby. Bjorn died first a few months ago. Stardew and Pamby just passed away. [0.25 ppm]...........................................................Ammonia Level? [0 ppm]................................................................Nitrite Level? Only things in the tank with the fish now is the air stone/bubbler and gravel. I think she will try and post pictures soon and can fill in more info that I have left out. Also her two comets, Winnie and Lloyd, are in their own tank and are doing just fine.
  10. haha poor Sarah has frisky boys and prude girls
  11. the spray bar isn't for making the bubbles...it's for splash. the bubble wand is for the bubbles. the splash drives the bubbles down into the tank for oxygenation. but if you put the two together and are happy w/ how it goes then I say !
  12. dipsticks/test strips won't give you the accuracy that drop kits will. I use API, but I think there's a diff brand the UK members use so I'd have 2 ask. can you take a picture of the "white fluff"? it's hard to say what it is as one person's white fluff is different from someone else's white fluff. Ich isn't going 2b fluffy, it'll look like the fish is covered in granulated sugar. Usually starting on the fins first.
  13. your tank pH is 7.6, tap is 6. This means you should be raising the tap to 7.6 before doing water changes. fluctuations in pH are stressful in fish and can be extremely problematic in some cases. In your case your pH is getting higher, not lower, this is better then the opposite. I'll pm someone who I think can help you work on this problem. do you think you'd be able to seal the bamboo ornament? also, Koko mentioned your filter doesn't have enough gph, were you planning on upgrading/adding to it? Your cycle should become more steady once you change your maintenance routine, but you still need to get more water flowing per hour for that size of a tank.
  14. At the Tank's back wall,I think maybe Sakura hit the nail on the head My bubble bar is the big type and it makes big bubbles(not tiny ones) and I Think if i pull it forward some it might help, but thanks anyway for your input Martha well we posted at the same time, Sakura and I, so I thought maybe deleting my post as hers was more informative but then I remembered I can't do that, lol
  15. I'm not sure why there is water running down the tank. how do you have yours placed?
  16. sorry, thought I read he had red markings on his belly. I must be getting threads mixed up.
