  1. Thanks Hidr. Maybe he's just a strange fish. The water's down to 78, hopefully that will help.
  2. Thanks for the response, Kristi! I lowered the setting on his heater, so we'll see if that helps. I do have a small filter that would fit in his tank, but my only concern would be that his tank is taller than it is long, so it would be harder for him to escape any current. I suppose I could always just put it in and see what he thinks of it, or even try to find room in my dorm for my long 9-gallon. I do miss partial water changes and a cycled tank, 100% every week is kind of a pain.
  3. So, after having problems with goldfish, a few months ago I decided to switch and get a betta. But, I'm new to this and don't know what to expect from him. He has a 4 gallon tank with a heater (temp a pretty constant 82 degrees) and a lighthouse to swim through. The pH is around 7.2 - 7.4. The tank is unfiltered, so I change 100% once a week. He seems mostly healthy, eats like a pig, and swims actively, but occasionally (once or twice a week) I'll see him dart around the tank. It doesn't quite look like flashing, as he doesn't seem to be rubbing on anything, but I don't know what else he'd be doing. About two months ago, he suddenly had a chunk of tail missing, and about half an hour later another chunk was gone. Ever since then, he goes through a cycle where his tail heals and starts growing back, and then suddenly it's frayed/missing pieces again. Also, he stopped flaring a while ago. Whenever I show him a mirror or point at him (he used to flare at my finger) he just backs away slightly and stares. Sometimes he paces in front of the mirror, but no flaring. Can anyone make sense of my silly fish for me? Is his tank not set up right? More frequent water changes? Lower the pH? Is the temp too high? Or is he just a nut-case with a bad tail-biting habit?
  4. Wow, that never occurred to me. I'd really like to know what to do with this stuff too...
  5. Thanks for the help, but he died today while I was at work. I did a water change and got the Nitrite down to 0 (yes, it was .25ppm. Oops). He made a few feeble attempts at swimming after that, but that was it. He kept "floating" on his side, just above the bottom of the tank. His tail was shredded and a little bloody from getting caught in the filter again, so I put nylon over the intake and that seemed to keep him away. No, he didn't have dropsy anymore, and I didn't see any signs of the fungus. But, with his fins clamped so tightly I could have just not seen the fungus. Sorry for the confusion when I mentioned my other fish, he died before I ever got Sunny. I have glass marbles on the bottom, but I bleached everything but the filter media, which I tossed, before doing a fishless cycle. When that was done, I got Sunny. I'd still love any ideas on what killed him, it was heartbreaking to watch two fish die (seemingly) the same way, and I don't want to see a third. The last fish had no Nitrites in the water, but maybe that was what killed Sunny, or a combination of that and other problems.

This is the second fish to have the same problem. Happy and healthy, then starts to bottom sit, then the fins clamp more and more and he bottoms sits more often. Eventually, the fish so weak he gets stuck to the filter intake. He even looks like he's starting to curve his spine to the side like Ace. The cycle had a mild crash (after recycling itself) after the last water change, but it never got over 25 ppm. I don't know what to do.
  7. No, I didn't add any epsom salt. I remember Ace not liking it, so I was hoping to avoid it if he got better. The dropsy is either gone or hiding now, so I'll just keep an eye on the water and keep up the metromeds. The tank seems to have re-cycled, which should help. I'll have to look into buff-it-up, but that all depends on how much money my college takes. Now he seems to have a fungus (white cottony "spider webs" on him and his plants, which I threw out) so I'll try raising the (aquarium) salt back up to .3%. Poor little guy just can't catch a break. Thanks again for the help.
  8. It never occurred to me that the cycle would build itself mostly in my gravel. Those bacteria are driving me nuts. Nitrite are back down to 0, so maybe it recycled. I'll be sure not to bother all of the gravel next time I clean it. Yeah, I know 9 is a little small (it was used, and I thought it was a 10 when I got it). Someday I'd love 2 fish in a 30 gallon, but it's just not gonna work out until I graduate from college and get my own place. As long as it stays cycled, I don't mind changing water a few times a week. Thanks again, I'll keep an eye on him and keep him on his meds. I got some jump start with the meds last time, so maybe I'll give him a few of those too.
  9. Thanks spider man. The coral is in there because my tap water has no GH/KH and the Ph would drop to about 6.4 really quickly without it. I really wish I knew why the second half of my cycle crashed. Stupid bacteria. An update: Sunny seems a little better. This morning he was active and happy. Most of the bloating was gone and his scales were more flush. He's less active now, but the dropsy isn't getting worse. When I checked this afternoon, the Nitrite was still under .25 ppm. I'll keep him on the metromeds, but should I still use any other meds? Or would that be overmedicating him? I don't think keeping the water warm will be a problem, I can never seem to cool it off.
  10. I cleaned the filter, threw out anything that was replaceable, and bleached it after Ace died, but I haven't touched it since I cycled the tank afterwards. The temp is around 77-80 (79 at the moment). Can that cause/contribute to dropsy? I don't have any Maracyn2, but if they sell it at the LFS I can get it tomorrow. Unfortunately, I can't get any pics. My camera just refuses to focus on him. Maybe I can borrow a better one tomorrow. It doesn't seem far along yet though. They definitely aren't flush, but if you don't look closely you might not notice. He is fat though. Still swimming and foraging, so I'm still hopeful. He seems to have finally managed to eat the meds. Either that or he hid it really well. I'll try cutting it in thirds this time instead of in half. Now I know how my parents felt trying to make me eat veggies. Thanks for the help and support. These guys sure make you work for them.
  11. Nice tank, I wish I had room for a nice big one like that.
  12. Definitely cycle it now. Whenever I took Ace to/from college I took him in a little container and just stuck his filter stuff in a gladware container with some tank water for the ride. I never added ammonia before, but that sounds like something I'll have to try with Sunny.

Poop was slightly stringy when I first got him, but mostly normal now. [*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating,ect..? Bottom sits occasionally I have no luck with fish. I did a fishless cycle, but ever since the first water change I've been having nitrite spikes. I've been trying to keep that down with WCs. When I checked on him this morning he looked a little fat and, sure enough, he was starting to pinecone. He had two scales behind his gills that had always looked like they weren't flush, but I figured it was just the shape of his body and the size of his scales (which it still could have been, I suppose). I'm trying to get him to eat metromeds I have left over from when Ace had dropsy (they don't expire until the end of the month, good timing), but even soaked and cut in half he can't seem to eat them. He just chews a bit, spits them out, and tries again. Ace did that too at first, so maybe he just has to learn how to eat them? Anyway, in his tank he has some Java Moss and an airstone, but what do I do for the dropsy? I missed his last Prazi treatment (oops...), can flukes cause dropsy? I have some epsom salts I could try, but the aquarium salt isn't 100% gone yet (about .01% concentration now). Can epsom salts and prazi mix? Could something in my tank be giving my fish dropsy? I bleached it since losing Ace, could something survive that? Sorry for so many questions, I'm just worried whatever mystery illness got Ace will get Sunny too.
  14. Yay, I'm not alone! I've been trying to get a picture of my new fish to show off, but my camera hasn't cooperated. I did get a cool picture of the ghost that haunts his tank, though.
  15. Haha, yeah, he's a cutie. Curious about everything. I tried taking pics, but the camera wouldn't focus on him. I'll try again, but if that doesn't work I'll have to borrow a better camera or something. Don't worry, they'll be up eventually.
  16. He seems to be better. I don't know what was up with him, but he seems to have stopped. At least whenever I'm around, anyway. He already figured out the feeding routine and plays in the filter current like it's an exercise pool, so I'll just watch him for a few days. If he stays active, I'll guess was it probably just shock/stress/new tank syndrome.
  17. Thanks Lynda. He's looking better, not moping as often. Or at least, when he does he still looks alive. Hopefully he was just still a little stressed. Yes, I got those results right before I posted. My nitrite spiked a bit when I put him in on Monday, up to .25, but I put in extra Amquel+ and it was gone in a day. I hope he's ok, I don't think I could handle losing another fish.

I brought home a little blue/white/yellow oranda 3 days ago. He adjusted quickly and seemed fine, searching for food. He ate whenever I fed him, but he occasionally hid in the corner behind my plastic plants. I figured he was just adjusting, but twice today he sat there leaning slightly to the side, looking dead except for his mouth barely moving to breathe. When I got his attention, both times he started swimming and scavenging, and he's fine at the moment. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but this is exactly what Ace did before he suddenly got worse and died, and I never figured out what caused it. I saw him flash once yesterday, shortly after I increased the salt from .1% to .2%. Could he not like the salt? I'm a little afraid to put more salt in the tank until I know what's going on. If it's useful, I got him at That Fish Place in Lancaster.
  19. Can I have Twix? I'm such a sucker for black/chocolate fish with white bellies. All of your fish are so adorable.
  20. Be careful if you get too big a tub, anything over 10 gallons will need reinforced to keep the sides from bowing out under all the weight. They shouldn't mind being in a tub, though. Good luck with your fish!
  21. Awww... he's such a cutie! I'm glad he pulled through.
  22. The tank is cycled, otherwise the Nitrate wouldn't be there. I remember reading that Amquel doesn't affect the cycle at all, just keeps ammonia from hurting the fish, to a certain extent. I only used Amquel when I did a waterchange, the bacteria took care of the rest of it. I don't think it ever slowed the cycle down. I'll have to double check on that though, before getting a new fish.
  23. Thanks for trying to help, but the poor guy didn't make it through the day. I had him for about 5 months, and treated him with .3% salt for several weeks. He came down with dropsy and was on metromeds for a month. I also treated him with prazi for a month after that. A few days ago I thought his mouth seemed somehow deformed, he had a harder time than normal eating his peas. Then he started bottomsitting occasionally, but then he'd suddenly go back to normal for the rest of the day and I thought everything was fine. Yesterday he was gasping, spent most of the day on his side, and lost interest in food by the end of the day. Or, more accurately, he couldn't swim well enough to even try to look for it. His poop has been off and on stringy since I got him. I had just recently brought him home from college, so I figured it was stress for the past two weeks that caused it. It's too late to help him, but I'd still like to know what killed him so it doesn't happen again, and also whether I have to nuke the tank or if I can keep the cycle. Not that I have the heart to even touch it yet.
  24. One more thing I noticed: The bottom lobes on his tailfin are a little ragged, and the edge looks a little white. It could be that he's changing color to white, or that the skin is just so thin and translucent it looks white.
  25. An update: I don't think the poor guy's going to make it. He's always on his side, just kind of floating an inch from the bottom. Even when he tries to swim (rarely) he doesn't manage to right himself anymore. What could be wrong with him?
