  1. Hi Stakos -- I use aquarium salt because it was recommended to me by my trusted aquarium guy at the fish store. Helps promote general health, I suppose. But when I salt, I only add salt for the water that I've taken out/am adding to the tank. And I chose Melafix just because I had it on hand already, and its used for some bacterial stuff, and seems pretty gentle. I'm about to do another water change now. Anyone see a need for me to run out and pick up meds?
  2. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level 0 * Nitrite Level 0 * Nitrate level 30ppm * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.2 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) N/A Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? Drops - API * Water temperature? N/A * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 35g, 3 years * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Aqua Clear 50 * How often do you change the water and how much? Weekly, 40% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 2, 60% * How many fish in the tank and their size? One - 6 inches * What kind of water additives or conditioners? PH balance 7.5, chlorine remover, salt * What do you feed your fish and how often? Pellets, daily * Any new fish added to the tank? None * Any medications added to the tank? One dose of Melafix * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Salted 2 tsp per gallon at the last water change to see if that would help improve him. Other than that, I try to stick to mostly salt and not meds.. but about a year ago he had a bacterial infection that I used some on. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Bloody streaks, swelling/fluid sacs around telescope eyes * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Bottom sitting Hello lovely people -- thanks in advance for reading. Adagio hasn't been doing so well -- he's been bottom-sitting for about two days, with bloody streaks on his fins and big fluid sacs around his telescope eyes (included picture below). I did a 60% water change thinking it was water quality and salted the tank to 2tsp per gallon, but that hasn't helped. He IS eating, however. So that's a sign of life! I have been having trouble with the intake stem of my filter (seems almost warped, like water hasn't been going through it smoothly) and I wonder if that has slowly contributed to a change in water quality that I wasn't aware of. Other than that, I'm pretty stumped. I salt with every water change (just the normal dose, not disease treatment -- I do 1 TBSP per 5 gallons). In any case, I'm stumped. Would very much appreciate your help. Thank you so kindly, have beautiful days! 3. Doing SO much better today -- bought the buffer, he's acting normal, but his fins just look really terrible. I should definitely treat him with salt to heal, yes? How long will they take to repair? I hope he's not in too much pain. Yuck. Again, thank you -- will start changing more often than 2 weeks and will use the buffer!
  4. pH up to 7.0 Thanks for your help. I'll get the buffer tomorrow. You saved the day!!
  5. So glad to hear it! I'll change him now. When should I change again, tomorrow?
  6. I'll get on the change, though. Thanks so much. Should I add salt?
  7. I'm confused though - I did a 75% water change literally 2 hours ago. What could have dropped the pH so low in that time?
  8. pH from tap is about 7.2. I haven't been using it -- I just have it, it came with my test kit. It's API "pH UP" Aquarium pH adjuster. (says to add 2 drops for each gallon in the tank).
  9. I'll check the pH -- yes, I'm positive I add enough, because I change his water in increments of 2.5 gallons, which is how much can be held in my bucket I syphon into. I measure the conditioner in the cap. I have a pH up additive -- should I use it?

  11. Hi everyone - Adagio has been hanging at the top of his tank for 2 days or so. I noticed some red streaks in his fins with 2 or 3 white spots, so I did a 30% water change yesterday and added aquarium salt. Again this morning, I found that he was still hanging on the top. I left the house from about 845am - 5pm -- and when I came home, it was AWFUL. I've never seen something like this come over so fast -- all of his fins seem nearly completely shredded, there is white stuff (skin? fungus? dead scales?) hanging off him, his gills, his fins, his eyes, his mouth, everywhere, almost like a white cottony sheen. Fins and body are streaky and red. This seemed to happen so dramatically fast! I did an IMMEDIATE 75% water change and added the necessary "disease" dosage of aquarium salt to the tank (1 rounded tablespoons for every 5 US gallons). Here are the current water params (I can't find my nitrate tester.. and the pet store is closed, but I have everything else): Nitrites: 0 Ammonia: 0 pH: 6.4 Tank is 35 gallons, hexagon, with an Aqua Clear filter for 50g. The tank has been up and running with just him for 3 years. Any help is appreciated! He looks TERRIBLE. Thanks, and love to all.
  12. Great, thank you! I'll take some of the stones out and clean more often. Is twice a week appropriate?
  13. They're bigger stones - about an inch each, and I would imagine its an inch or two deep? I usually vacuum it every week and a half. I'll keep it up more often and add the salt. Should there be any other medications I need to worry about?
  14. And yes, I do have gravel - I recently added two fake plants. Could that have done anything?
  15. Yikes, I'm so sorry - in my haste I completely forgot: [*]Test Results for the Following: [*]Ammonia Level? 0 [*]Nitrite Level? 0.5 [*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 35g - 2 years [*]What is the name and size of the filter(s)? No [*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Bloody streaks, white spots, a blood-colored spot surrounded by pale scales on his right side, looks like a bruise [*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Swimming a little more spastic than usual -he just seems a bit unsteady
  16. So I have been the worst mom ever and have totally spaced on water testing the past two weeks - and I noticed that my telescope, Adagio, has formed some red streaks, white spots, and an almost bruise-like red spot on his right side. So I tested the water, and found that the nitrates were at 0.5, ammonia at 0. I've done a 50% water change, and plan to keep them up for the next week - but should I be medicating him in the meantime, for the sores on his body? I'm just so afraid he has septicemia or something and I don't want to let it go untreated! I'm so mad at myself for not paying attention! 35g tank - Adagio, telescope, 6 inches, is the only fish Aqua Clear Filter 50g Tank up and running for 2 years - carbon and two foams in filter. Thank you in advance!
  17. Both good points. I'll cut back a little and see if there's a change. I've never really had to deal with algae before.. he's usually done it for me If the growth rate has increased, what does that mean for my care of the tank? What do I need to change, if anything?
  18. My giant telescope Adagio has lived in a 35g by himself for about 8 months - in the past month and a half or so he's stopped eating the algae that would build up on his cave and bubbler, and now it sways from the river rocks and looks really long and tangly. Is there some adjustment I should make to his diet, or does this mean that HIS preferences have changed, and mom needs to learn a few things?
  19. Ooh sorry to confuse - I meant that I am switching their tanks completely, as in putting them in each other's tanks. With the smaller telescope in the smaller tank, I can hand feed him more easily and have an easier time with more frequent partial water changes. I was more concerned about moving one fish into another fish's water. In theory I thought there shouldn't be many problems, but I just wanted to check if it was okay to put them in as is, maybe with a big water change, or if there's another way to approach it.
  20. Hi everyone. My house currently houses 2 telescopes - one is alone in a 35g high hexagon tank (after the death of his tank mate... very tragic), the other in a 10g. The telescope that is in the 35g is about 2 inches smaller than the 10g fish, suffers from severe SBD, I've been hand feeding him lately, very sensitive to water conditions. The larger telescope is very hardy and healthy. I am thinking the best thing to do is to switch their tanks - put the smaller, weaker goldfish in the smaller tank so I can perform water changes more easily and hand feed him if need be, plus I'm sure the bigger guy would like some more space to zoom around in. Is there anything I should be worried about in switching the tanks? Should I empty out all the water from both? I've never done this before but they just seem to be in mismatched homes and I'd like to make sure everyone is happy. I am going to get a new filter for the 10g anyway because the one I have is sort of old. Thanks so much for your help!
  21. Did water change and added salt, will up salt later today. The white spots are not running lateral down the fish, but rather just sort of on the dorsal and tail fins. They're pretty big. Could this be a fungus, or ich?
  22. Fish I suppose is a little fatter than normal - I do have aquarium salt, and you're absolutely right, my mistake - 0 nitRITES. So big water change, add salt, anything else? Should I dip him for the spots and the streaking?
  23. Hi everyone. I'm home from college to the horrible news that one of my 2 goldfish has passed away from illness, and the other is holding on to life. He IS eating and moves from time to time, but mostly seems to be struggling on his side/back at the bottom of the tank with white ######-looking spots and red streaks on his fins. His fins are also clamping. Ammonia: 0 Nitrate: 0 pH: 7.8 Drops test kits, API Tank Size: 35g Filter: Aqua Clear 50 Changes: 25% water changes every few days Size and Number of Fish: 1 fish in the tank left - telescope, 4 inches Additives: Stress Coat water conditioner Food: ProGold and peas No new fish ** they just finished a 3-day round of antibiotics about two weeks ago, the other fish didn't make it but this one seemed to improve slightly - before the antibiotics he was completely lethargic, but now seems to at least be struggling to swim. Thanks so much everyone for your help in advance.

  25. Hi everyone - I'm away at college and my dad is currently in charge of my 35g with two fantails. He emailed me this morning to tell me that they are "bloated, almost round, but all the tests are coming out normal". Is this a matter of food, dropsy, or some kind of infection? Is there anything I can tell him to do immediately that will help until we can figure out what it is?
