  1. Hello all, I recently moved from San Bernardino, CA to Moreno Valley, CA. Only about a half hour away from each other. Hank, my oranda, made the trip very well - no problems. I have a 20 gallon tank that has been set up for over a year, I have one 3" oranda in it. It has 40 gallons of filtration, I use Prime wc. Nitrates 10 Nitrite 0 pH 7.5 Ammonia .25 Temp 68-70 Water is hard, city water. The ammonia readings out of the tap are .25 in Moreno Valley, this is new to me. I read somewhere that the ammonia can be present but may take too long to detoxify (turn in to Nitrate) and it could hurt my fish. He seems to be doing fine and I went to the store and got Amquel+ for him. My question is this, how long can he survive in water that is .25 out of the tap? He really amazed me at how well he made this trip, I'm shocked he didn't get Ick. In my haste to set his tank up and get water in it asap, the temperature went way down and the change in pH from San Berdo to Moreno Valley was scary. Thanks in advance, any tips on dealing with the ammonia will be appreciated. Teri and Hank
  2. Hello! Just wondering, when it comes to epsom salt is there anything a newbie should know before administering? I used it to help a pearly with what I thought was constipation. Actually, both of my goldies get real floaty after a meal so I felt it would help them both. Long story short, the pearly died and my oranda suffered serious fin rot before finally dying. I only dosed 1/8 teaspoon per 5 gallons, yes my water is hard and naturally high in nitrAte. Because of my water issues, I won't be getting goldies again until I find myself a home with softer more stable water. I hope to be moving in the next few months. Anyways, any FYI about epsom salts that anyone can give would be appreciated.
  3. I would like to hear from a moderator too...I have a pearlscale that has the exact same thing going on. Lets hope we hear from one soon!
  4. Hello and thank you. My filter is one that you would use on a 40 gallon tank, I've been coming to Koko's for so long that I've been literally brow-beaten in to "proper goldfish care" submission! The white grains were almost as if it were small chunks of plastic, they were on the tank floor not on his body. I usually don't put things in my tank or allow strange articles to reach it but there they were. The best way to describe them would be...goodness, I don't know. I can say that it was not organic, or didn't look that way at least. All that aside, the only things I have in my tank are some polished rocks (rock tumbler polished) and a piece of driftwood I bought at Pe*co. The tank has been that way for several months and no problems, I have removed the live plants because they weren't doing so well. I've tested my pH in many different ways to see why it raises so drastically and have yet to come to a conclusion. I will set up a qt tank tonight and get him some medicated food. I'll check back with how he's doing.
  5. No I made a mistake there, following the directions on the side of the API Aquarium Salt container (one TBSP for every 5 gallons) I suppose we could say that the salt level is at 0.2% now since I have done it twice. I'll try to get a picture of the swelling this evening. THX!!

Porkchop is acting like he's sick. I've noticed his belly might be a bit bloated, certainly is an odd shape. He barely eats, but he does get some food. I fasted them Sunday and Monday so I haven't seen any poops. He doesn't bottom sit, he just floats and he's not moving very fast at all in fact he lets me scoop him up with ease. I pushed on his belly yesterday and it made him shoot out of my hand. Yesterday, there were tiny white bubbles attaching themselves to his fins, but they came off whenever I touched them. Ju-Ju is fine, she never seems to be affected by sick tank-mates. Yesterday afternoon when I noticed the odd behavior I did a 20% wc and started his first round of salt. I didn't even expect him to make it through the night but he did. I added the second round of salt this morning and fed them spirulina. What's wrong with my poor baby?? Thanks all...
  7. Hi Cometgirl, I just went through a brutal bout of SBD with my oranda. He was a lot bigger than Teresa, but if she is sensitive to certain foods, might as well nip it in the bud right now. Do as was suggested earlier and fast her for three days, then feed a pea. When you're ready to start feeding again, look at how you're feeding. Are you soaking the pellets first? Do you squeeze the air out real well? If yes, then you might want to explore foods for floaty sensitive fish. Gel food can either be a blessing or a big NO, frozen foods like brine shrimp and spirulina or bloodworms might work well too. Try more fresh veggies and fruits but avoid gassy greens like brocolli. Good luck!
  8. Yeah I know, a little late to be asking this question but as I was lying in bed trying to sleep, I thought about the seeds in raspberries. I fed my goldies raspberries this afternoon, will they be able to pass the seeds? They're each about 1.5 to 2" long, just little guys.
  9. I don't see how, tumbled rocks are tumbled with no chemicals. They use water and a steel tumbler and tumble them for weeks, that's how they come to be polished. Anyways, yes...I have polished rocks in my aquarium. I'll post a picture when I get home.
  10. Yup, I have a high end tester and a low end. The pH was darker than the darkest of the high end. I'll keep an eye on it for now. Hey, what do you know about rocks that are polished in a rock tumbler?
  11. Ph Level - off the chart! The color was such a dark purple, there was nothing like it in the color key! YIKES! This morning it was back down, 7.8

My mom was watching the fish, said the girl started swimming funny one day. Acting like she had swim bladder disorder or something, but it didn't last long. When I got home last night I tested the water and found the pH was really high. I did a 60% wc, removed all plants and scrubbed the driftwood. This morning the pH was 7.8 and there was floaty poop in the tank. Could they be impacted eggs? What could have made the pH go so high? BTW, yesterday was their day for fasting and they had spirulina this morning. I noticed the floaty poop before I fed them.
  13. OMG! Juju, Porckchop and I are all pulling for you! Best of luck!
  14. I like the orange and white Oranda...he's sweeeeet!
  15. Hello, Should I be concerned about clamped dorsal fins? Their behavior is normal, water is fine but they both have their dorsal fins clamped down. Today is a fasting day, perhaps they think their throats have been cut? Just wondering...
  16. Love that ranchu, he is very handsome!
  17. Thanks you guys, kinda made me smile. I'll give him some time, he is soooooo cuters, I don't want to lose him. Thank YOU!!
  18. Hello! As some of you know I brought home a baby oranda the other day. He's in a 5 gallon Rubbermaid tub with a Penguin Biowheel 150 on it. The filters and bio media are all cycled and his water params are good. He is in 0.3% salt right now and getting a Prazi Pro treatment too. This is his third day on Prazi, I've dosed 1/4 teaspoon twice. Following the dosing schedule quoted from Rick at GFC, recommended for new fish in QT. I also did a hydrogen peroxide dip (1 pt peroxide, 9 pts tank water) for 10 seconds when I first brought him home. At this time, he is just kind of swimming in place. He hovers in the same spot constantly. He looks alert and wiggly, but doesn't snarf for food like other GF do, doesn't swim around and explore. Could the current on the filter be too strong? Is it just the new kid blues? He has a place to hide but stays out in the open. What could it be?
  19. Two of these pics are blurry because he is in QT right now. He has the cutest little twitch, I hope it goes away but if it doesn't and it's just part of his persona, I'm good with it!! Porkchop! Top View Porkchop! Notice the light spot on his wen, I think it's growth. A face only a mother could love!! Can't wait to get him in the 20 gallon with JuJu, she is going to love him.
  20. Pictures probably tonight!! If I had to describe him, I'd call him the English Bulldog of goldfish...too cute!! His wen is spectacular for such a little guy.
  21. Here is a great link with several different recipes you can try! Gel Food Recipes
  22. Hello All!! I brought home the cutest orange oranda last night, he has the chubbiest cheeks and such a round body!! I named him "Porkchop" and will post pictures soon! Anyways, he is only about 2.5" and in a 5 gallon Rubbermaid with a Penguin 150 and an airstone. He has a little plant and a few rocks. I noticed in the LFS that he probably has issues, he tends to twitch his body to the left a lot. I noticed some possible irritation around his left gill and he was flashing in the pet store aquarium...but, he was too cute to pass up! I dipped him in a solution of hydrogen peroxide and tank water last night for 10 seconds. I have the tank at .02% salt with a 1/4 teaspoon of Prazi Pro. Tested the water this morning for ammonia, 0. He didn't even look at his food this morning, I didn't feed him last night so I'm sure he has to be hungry. What should I do if he still isn't eating this afternoon? Is there anything I else I can be doing for him to make him feel welcome?
  23. I just went through a terrible time with my floaty oranda. The ONLY foods that would not make him float were collard greens, kale, scallops and clams. Even peas made him float! Some of the foods that came highly recommended while I was experimenting were the Mazuri brands of gel food. Some get great results and some just can not use it. It is worth a try though and will give the other fish in your tank a great source of nutrition. What Trinket said about throwing out old food is soooooo true! Do not try to feed gel food that is more than a few days old! If Mazuri doesn't work, try the gel food recipes here at Koko's. I took a simple recipe and substituted the ingredients that agreed with him along with multivitamin and acidopholus. If you can find a mortar and pestle instead of blending, that is a real bonus.
  24. Sounds like a good idea, 10 gallons it is. Would it be OK to put a fish in? I want another Oranda. Is the one cycled filter and the bio-bag enough? How long should I run a salt regimen? I have prazi, should I dose with that too? At the same time? I'm just having trouble remembering most of the dosing rules I've learned in the last 7 months.
