My anti-floater gelfood recipe

number20121

I made a video tutorial of how I prepare my fish's gel food. It really does wonders for their floating. The only one that gets a bit floaty-ish still is Orange Fishie, but that is because he usually gobbles air after eating :doh11:

It still has massively decreased his floating too though. Half of my fish started getting very floaty after eating pellets, and only after pellets. And gel food with gelatin.

This current recipe seems to be really great for them. Major kudos again to Alex for providing koi clay and agar agar! :hug

That was fun. I like the idea of adding the agar agar to smaller batches as you use them. And that's interesting about the protien layer on the top of the water. I was looking forward to hearing your voice too. lol.

No! Enough of my voice. This girl at work the other day told me I sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger :doh11:

But Dan, I really prefer freezing up the plain portions. I saw it multiple times how the fresh gel food has perfect semi firm texture, but after defrosting from the same batch, it's like defrosted tofu. It becomes spongy and flaky when I cut it in bit sized pieces (about 3-4mm cubes), that's a real pain in my :fbottom:

she must have been referring to herself! i am sure you misunderstood!

i get the same problem here too fang. i made 2 months of food and on defrost? sponge sponge sponge.. i don't like it at all. i wonder if the goodness of it is departing into the defrosted juices of what it releases at the time of defrost? and then when added to the tank, although it doesn't fully break apart, there are still particles all over the place..

dunno, i don't think i am Agar Agar convinced tbh..

i am glad you mentioned it, as i was about to defrost the whole lot and add more Agar Agar powder to if it will solidify some more. i have also noticed that since feeding the new food (all i changed was add the probiotics and use Agar Agar instead of gelatin) that Hercules bottom sits with dorsal halfmast.. i wonder if he doesn't like the new formula?

No, she was referring to me. She said it has to do with the Austria accent :rofl

And the "mess" while feeding is what bothers me the most about it. I love the agar agar and have seen that it is better for my floaters than the gelatin, I'll just have to add the agar agar weekly to the defrosted batch. That's not really much work at all, so I don't mind. It also seems to make the texture of fresh gel food smoother than gelatin. I always ended up having small clumps of gelatin, while the agar agar dissolves so perfectly and is so easy to blend with the food mixture :)

About your recipe, I don't see what would bother him about it. The probiotics are natural, something we all have in our digestive system. As long as you don't massively overdose with that, it should be fine. And the agar agar is more natural for the fish than gelatin, since it is algae derived and not made from collagen.

Do you have some of your previous recipe left? I wonder if he would show improvement if he gets your old recipe, just to see how he does?

no, no food left from the gelatin.. but i aim to make some this weekend coming. i would like to see if there is a difference. only problem is, i made two changes. like i said, 1. the probiotics, 2. the Agar Agar.. so which of the two is causing him to bottom sit? or is it just coincidence? perhaps the beginnig of a different problem? i really don't know. all i know is that this behavior began after introducing Agar Agar and Probiotics.

That's kind of strange. Maybe he simply doesn't LIKE it? But neither the probiotics nor the agar agar have any distinctive flavor to them. :hmm
