Bypassing Overhead Filter Made Easier

Trinket

I needed to bypass my overhead filter because I am medicating the tank. I turned off the filter and blocked the exit pipe by raising the filter box. I wedged a plastic aquarium gravel shovel under the box so that the water cannot drain out. Then I filled the filter box with tank water which it is sitting in now and so all the filter media is submerged. It should keep the beneficial bacteria alive until the meds are removed n a few days time.

Sounds interesting... what kind of filter are you talking about? Need to make sure the water in the filter is well aerated. If it is not, aerobic bacteria will start to decay

Now I remember your filter... very cool! A word of caution if you are medicating to treat parasite or bacterial infections. These organisms can remain in your filter media and reinfect your aquarium when you remove the bypass.

I think its the same principle as the traditional bypassing by putting the filter in a bucket with an airstone. For 24 hours its hoped that the good guy bacteria will outnumber the badguys. With no more new incoming badguys the beneficial bacteria do their stuff. I was dealing with gram neg aeromonas or possibly streptococcus ssp- nothing really really heavy and not parasites.
