Gel Food For Beginners

alistairw

I was left on my own today as my girlfriend was at work. I decided to make some gel food for my fishes. I used tuna as they already have veggie gel food. Then i thought i would do a 'how to' slideshow. Hope that it helps anyone who always fancied making some gel food but wasn't sure how to.

I really should get out more ! :)

Nice demonstration. I never thought to use an immersion blender....definately a lot easier to clean than a normal blender. :)

you can add whatever you want as long as it's safe for your fishies. I already have a batch of veggie gel food made up. It has peas, spinach, broccoli and courgete (zuccini) in it :)

The thought of that makes me want to throw up, I hat etuna, lol.

Great slideshow. What are the benefits of gelfood for the fish?

I think that the benefits of gel food are that you can control what your fish are eating. If you look at the ingredients of some of the cheaper pre made fish food especially some brands of flakes they are bulked up with things such as ash. With gel food i know that my fish are getting fresh and safe food to eat. Plus they seem to love it which is a bonus :)

Thank you so much for this thread! I was afraid to feed them anything I made, but this, I could do. Lots cheaper too. (smile) happy new year.

Nice slideshow! :D If only my gel food was cut up so nicely like that but the fish don't mind. That is a great how-to for the first timers to gel food. :)

This is a great and informative thread and easier to do than I thought, so much in so that tomorow when I go to a LFS, i'll pop in and get some ingredients to make my own.

This thread should be pinned :)

thats what i'm doing today, I've even got the dr oekter stuff lol, go tescos! It does say not to add water to the mixture but to add mixture to water but guess its a moot point as you've got fantastic geletaine squares XD

I'm making pea and salad to help flush out my gf insides as they've been in 9c water for too long :)

I always add a bit more gelatin than is stated on the packet. I think I used 2 and half packs to make 1 pint in total

I used 2 packets based on what i've heard of others saying that the it breaks up in the water. I made it but the fish didn't touch it.

They also didn't touch the flakes either.

Is food dye a problem for feeschies? Like the food dye they use for Christmas cookies?

That is toooooo cool!

FYI:It isn't much different when using veggies. You just need to make sure you blanch or nuc them for a bit to soften them up! I have a Magic Bullet I blend mine in. Drop the hulled peas, spinach, garlic and some cooked salmon in. Buzz in around a bit, and add the geletin mixture...Oh and put it in the fridge to solidify!

That was awesome! No need to get out more, make more videos!!! :)

It wouldnt be good. I wouldnt give it to them. Have you ever taken a flower and placed it in dyed water? The peddals will turn to the color you put in the water...Same thing will go for us and fish to much color will come out through the skin and poo :(

I wanted to drop some food dye directly under the output to see where the water flows in the tank. I wasn't going to put it in their food, but I don't think it'd be good for them anyway, because of the good point you made.

This is really helpful! My goldfish always gobble down their food, but I think they especially like the gel food. Also, my pleco gets to have some of it before the goldfish gobble it all down, since they can't eat it as quickly as flakes. Thanks!
