A Sad Day

Fedex was not kind to my fish from RG today. The Black and Orange Telescope is doing fine his bag was intact, but the Calico didn't make it. She was barely alive when she arrived, and I did what I could to save her, which wasn't much, but she died within about half an hour of being delivered. I called Steve to see if there was anything I could do besides what I already was, but he said it was all I could do and really I knew when I first saw her that she was not going to make it. Steve is such a great guy, I let him know she died and he had refunded my money from her including the shipping within the hour, what great customer service. I feel really awful that I couldn't save her though, she was really beautiful.

The male has just been released into QT and he seems fine so far but he is hiding, who can blame him. He is striking, a really dark black against a bright bright orange. He has a lot more orange now that he did in the photos I have of him, but it's so bright, he looks like he's on fire. Hopefully I will get photos of him later this weekend, but for now I am going to let him settle in and relax.

I'm so sorry :( Do you know what happened during shipping? I was so scared to open the box when I got my new fish via fed ex.

I'm so sorry. Shipping can be hard on these fish. We don't ever really know what they endure to get to us.

But now to concentrate on the one that made it. I wish him (and you too!) an uneventful QT

They delivered it on time, but they were far from gentle with them. She only had a few cups of water left and I don't know if it was not enough water, if the oxygen hit the water and made it toxic, or if she just plain got smashed.

Now that I have him in a tank swimming around I am worried about one of the male's eyes. It's a bit bigger than the other one and I can't tell if the pupil is damaged or not, its dark in the room and if I turn on a light he hides behind the plants. I am hoping that I am just being paranoid, he has one orange eye and one black one, so maybe (hopefully) its an illusion. I wouldn't be so worried if I could tell if the pupil is ok or not, telescopes eyes grow different sometimes I think.

One of the calico's eyes looked like it was mashed and you couldn't see a pupil on it.

aaw hun.. that's terrible, i would be onto steve about this also.. it's so unfortunate that they travelled badly.. how sad :(

don't turn the lights on for anything. at least for a few days to a week.. keep salt at 0.1% so that it does not become infected. he risks losing that telescope if the eye is even mildly split. feed every second day and only once on that day.

if you must have the light on, drape a towel or two over the tank to shade him from the room light. if you must check up on him, get yourself a really low light torch or cover a normal torch with some dark cloth, only enough for you to check him out.

the poor darling. i hope he comes through ok for you.

I'm so sorry :(

I would go ahead and salt the QT to 0.1%, since it seemed they had a very stressful trip. The salt will be helpful in preventing infection and stimulate healing.

It wont hurt to start the salt and I'm on that now, but I am not sure about the eye, I just can't get a good look at it, and since they are different colors, I can't really tell if there is something wrong with it, or if I am just being paranoid.

I think it's just me being paranoid and the coloring on the eyes, I got a small flashlight out and examined it as best I could, and the pupil is ok I think and they eye is definately a bit bigger, but the coloring makes it look a lot bigger. I will salt anyway just to be safe.
