Loving being understocked

For the past year or so I was down to just one goldfish (Penny) and a BN pleco in my 55. I was so busy with other things and also waiting to see if there was a persistant issue in my tank after losing fish last year, that I never added more fish. The new fish bug finally bit around Christmas and I added Darwin.

So that puts me at 3 fish (BN included) in a 55 gallon, with an Aquaclear 110 (500 gph) and a Rena filstar XP 4 (450 gph), along with java fern and 2 anubias.

I cannot believe how well this system is working for me. I missed a water change this week and it made no (measurable) difference. I don't think I'll be adding any more fish. I also like the way the tank looks with just a few fish in it :)

I'm by no means trying to sound 'preachy' here at all, there's nothing wrong with fully stocking a tank, but I think after years of doing so and struggling to keep up with water changes, ect., this is the way for me. I'm so much more busy than I used to be with my career that I want the hobby to be relaxing, not stressful. I am one happy fish keeper right now :heart

I don't think you're being preachy at all! I totally agree. I don't miss the days of finally getting into bed, realizing I forgot to change the water, and having to get back up. Glad Penny and Darwin are doing well :)

I'm in the same boat! I have two fish in a 55 gallon, and I love it this way. I think understocking is best. :)

Yay! That's a great feeling, Chrissy! :)

I have a technical question for you. Why is your AC110 only running 160 gph?

That's great. I admire your discipline!

It looks like Penny is enjoying the company, though.

I have 4 goldies plus 5 minnows, and after I added the new ones, I realized preferred it when it was just Fluffy in all that water. I wish I'd only added one more fish so Fluffy could have company, but that's it.

Yes Penny does really enjoy the company, I would not choose to have a single goldfish anymore. :)

Alex....that was a total brain fart by me! I don't even know where that number came from! It should be 500gph!

I can only agree, if you believe it or not (considered I am Miss Overstocked). I would love to have a couple massive tanks and have them understocked. Not because I am having problems to keep everything in check *knocks on wood*, nor because I don't like taking care of this. I love doing water changes. If it wasn't for the water bill, I'd do 80% w/c every other day just for the heck of it.

But it would be nice to be understocked, really :)

That said, I reeeaally wish I could get that ryukin that's been eying ME since November :rofl

I love having just two right now. I am not home to keep an eye on things so it is less worry. But I have this thing about even numbers. lol I prefer odd numbers. So if/when I get home I may get one more to make the tank feel/look right to me. But that is as far as I plan to go.
