Yes, I still have fish!

First of all, this is my first entry in my 'official' blog, but I've had a blog thread going for awhile that can be found here I haven't been talking about my fish much lately because I have been so busy, and I've been dealing with a dog who wants to eat them, that I admit my involvement in the hobby has been pretty low. But thankfully the dog is now ok with the goldfish, so I'm hoping to get things rolling again. I still only have one goldie - Penny the ranchu. She shares my 55 gallon with Fr

Why doesn't someone buy them!?!

I live very close to a mall with one of the best lfs's in town. So naturally, whenever I'm in the area I stop in and look at the fish. For MONTHS now they've had the same batch of goldfish. In fact, I think they are all the same fish who were in the tank when I bought Darwin. None of them are particularly spectacular, but they aren't ugly either. All are medium sized and there's a nice variety (orandas, ryukins, moors). I'm not in the market for a new fish, but if someone doesn't buy them soon

To frog, or not to frog? That is the question!

So all my life I've been obsessed with amphibians. I currently have a 21 year old African clawed frog (I got him way back when my obsession started) and 3 awesome newts who I've had for about 7 or 8 years now. I wasn't really thinking about expanding the collection, but today I went to an lfs and they had a really nice variety of frogs! In particular, a dumpy (SUPER cute) and a pixie (sort of scary). I had a Cuban tree frog years ago and really enjoyed it, I'm wondering if it's time I got anot

Time for musical tanks?

So, twice now I have come into my office to find my hermit crab Lance casually sitting on top of his tank It's not a huge deal, as hermit crabs can survive just fine outside of their 'crabitats' for short periods....but still, I don't want a hermit crab wandering the house! Not to mention that if he ever gets brave enough to take the plunge from the tank to the floor, Prince might just eat him. So now I have to do some thinking. I could try to find something to weigh the top of his tank down,

the value of a good buffer

I just wanted to post this little note about how important buffers are when you have soft water like I do. I just tested the perams in my QT tank. I hadn't added buffer to it (since it's empty) and was shocked to see that in just a week, the pH was nearly down to 6.0!! Out of the tap it's about 7.0. I ran out and tested my main tank straight away. I always buffer it using buff-it-up, but I was worried. But, my tank was at a healthy 7.3. PHEW!!! So don't underestimate how quickly your pH can d

The time has come...

Now that Prince is ok with my goldfish and I have a little more spare time, I'm setting up a QT tank. It's time to get Penny some friends!!! :nana I don't know if I have the media to spare to get an 'instant cycle' on the tank so it may take a little while. I'm not going to take chances as I plan on QTing the fish for awhile, I don't want to risk harm to Penny (or Frosty). I'm hoping to get the tank set up in the next few days and then start looking. I haven't even gone into a goldfish secti

the big move = $$$$!

So I'm still scheming away about the 'tank shuffle' that I'm going to do...and it hit me just how expensive this hobby can be. To do what I want, I don't really need to purchase that much stuff - when compared to say, setting up an entirely new tank. BUT I'm looking at: - a new wire cover for my 30 gallon to keep the hermit crab in - some more deco for the hermit crab tank upgrade (jungle vines, etc.) - enough sand for a 40 gallon - lots of live plants - a new light bulb for the 40 gallon

tempting fishies!

So, with the insanely busy few weeks I've had my QT tank did not get set up, but the good news is work is going to slow down for a bit and I saw some great fish tonight. My favorite lfs has their goldfish section fully stocked! There are great black moors. I'll be getting one for sure, I just have to decide on the size. There are itty bitty ones, which my last moor was when I got him (George II...naturally, the next one is going to be George III), but they have some very nice medium sized ones

Success!

Tonight I cleaned my goldfish tank and Mr. "I want to eat the fish" came downstairs to see what was going on. He made a few snaps at Penny but I just blocked him with my leg gently and said no, and....HE LISTENED! It's as if he finally said, "ok ok I get it, I can't eat her". So he sat there for about a half hour, just watching me :D Now I'm sure he'll have some relapses, but this was a huge success! I think it will soon be time to get some new goldies (how many times have I said that this y

Still no fish!

I set up a QT tank over a week ago now, feeling like it was time to add a third fish to my tank...and I cannot find one! I've been to five pet stores now and not a single one has anything but commons and fantails. It's like a fancy goldfish shortage or something! I guess those were the big sellers for the summer with people stocking ponds, hopefully they'll get some other varieties in soon. I did pick up a nice little apple snail that Jim named (get ready for it......) - Optimus Prime. Yes,

QT tank is set up!

I finally found the time to set up my QT tank last night....well tub, to be more specific. I picked up a nice rubbermaid (gotta love a $7 'tank') and set the spare Aquaclear 50 up on it last night. I took the old 'polishing pad' out of my canister and stuffed it in the filter. It has to be FULL of bb's, I put in some ceramic cylinders from the canister too. So hopefully that will speed the cycle along. It should make a nice temporary home for some new fish, it's big and very over filtered. I'm

QT is almost over!

Well my little fish may join the big guys this weekend! His QT has gone well, he handled the salt with no issues and learned to eat sinking pellets in just one day He is still quite nervous and likes to hide behind the filter, but I think once he's with other fish that will change. I'm a little worried about putting him in with Penny and Darwin due to the size difference, but I think both are fairly peaceful and hopefully it won't be an issue. I'll keep a close eye for the first few days to be

Prince wins this round

Well, I've decided that my tropical tank has to move. I have had Prince for a few months now and I simply do not have the time to train him not to try to eat the little critters! I've been keeping the tank covered which is no fun for anyone. Based on Prince's background and breed mix, I honestly don't think he will ever be 100% trustworthy around the fish, he probably won't even be 50% He's a husky mix with an unbelievable prey drive who had to hunt to survive for the first part of his life...

Penny isn't alone anymore!

I added Darwin to the tank today, and Penny finally has a friend (of her own species, Frosty the bn pleco is in there too). So far so good, she seems interested in the new guy. I posted a video here http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/96719-penny-meets-darwin/page__fromsearch__1 When I got Darwin I was also very tempted to get a black oranda that was in the tank with him. I saw last week that he was still there. I'm considering going back for him, but I'm not sur

Nothing new for now

Despite all my talk of new pets, I've decided not to add anything just yet. To my surprise, my hermit crab is still going strong (I thought he wasn't well) so I'm going to keep him in the 15 gallon tank and hold off on getting toads. I'd still like to sometime, but not yet. And as for the betta....Jim and I were walking around the lfs yesterday and I looked at the bettas, mentioniong how I'd love to get another one. His response..."please, please no." It's not often he objects to pets, but I

Not setting up the 40 gallon

Well after a LOT of thinking and planning, I've decided not to set up the 40 gallon that I was given a few months ago I simply don't have the space. After I rearranged my office it looked so much better and I knew that if I put another tank in there it would be far too crowded. I feel ok about it though, because instead I'm completely overhauling the four tanks that I have in there already. I got a brand new 'retirement' tank for my frog Pudgy and gave the crab tank a great cleaning...here's

new unexpected tank!

So I got a call from my brother in law yesterday....his sister is back in town for a visit after moving away a few years ago and she has some pet supplies she needs to get rid of, as they have been sitting in their parent's house, getting in the way. One item....a 40 gallon tank complete with all the accessories! He asked me if I wanted it and I immediately said no. I don't have the time or space for another tank. But then I saw the sister yesterday and after she twisted my rubber arm I said

New fish!

After 2 years, I finally got myself a new fish yesterday :nana I headed out with the intention of getting at least one, but maybe two new goldies. I only have one goldfish and a small pleco in my 55 gallon now, so I have the space. I went to one of my favorite lfs's. They always have a great selection of goldfish, and they didn't disappoint in terms of the variety, but not much stood out. My poor mom had to wait while I stood in front of the tanks for 15 minutes trying to make up my mind. O

New fish has a name!

I was just checking on my new guy in QT and thought it would be fun to give him a geeky biology name. I thought about a few Latin names, but settled with Darwin. I think it suits him So far he's doing well. Active and eating well, tolerating the salt. It'll be great to get him into the main tank. Here's another terrible photo of him

My fishy items

Over the past few years I've been collecting fishy type items to decorate on and around my tank. It's great now because I have a big tank stand with a nice top for laying things on, and there's free space on the wall next to the tank too. You can see some of them in this shot. So here are the items I've gotten over the last few years: A cute paperweight A glass sculpture from Pier One An awesome fantail! Making Plans

I've got the itch to add some new pets to my life and change my tanks a little. The surprise is that I don't want to add anymore goldfish! At least not for now. I really like the tank as it is with Penny, Darwin and Frosty. I'm super busy with work right now and the bio load on the tank is light enough that I only need to do a weekly WC. More fish would increase it and I just don't think it's smart right now, there's too great of a chance of me missing WC's and having issues. So for now 3's com

Loving being understocked

For the past year or so I was down to just one goldfish (Penny) and a BN pleco in my 55. I was so busy with other things and also waiting to see if there was a persistant issue in my tank after losing fish last year, that I never added more fish. The new fish bug finally bit around Christmas and I added Darwin. So that puts me at 3 fish (BN included) in a 55 gallon, with an Aquaclear 110 (500 gph) and a Rena filstar XP 4 (450 gph), along with java fern and 2 anubias. I cannot believe how well

It's betta time

It's been a few years now since I had a betta and I think it's time I got another Most of my pets are upstairs in my office now and I miss having one in the kitchen. I am going to look at what I have in storage in terms of tanks and possibly set something up. I'll have to be sure to put it somewhere the dog can't reach

It begins!

Last night I finally found time to get the 'big tank shuffle' started. I moved a bookshelf in my office to make space for the 40 gallon. Now this weekend I have to move the stand with my newts and tropical tank (that means emptying both tanks....groan). I'm also going to fill the 40 gallon in the garage and leave it for a few days to make sure it doesn't leak. I am putting the rock formations together as well. While I'm at it, the goldfish tank is getting a makeover. I'm excited!!!! Photos t

In case you're wondering...

In case anyone has noticed, I'm not a moderator anymore. I decided to step down because my commitments at work and home have really been keeping me from doing my job and I thought it was better if I stepped down. I just wanted to let people know in case they thought some sort of drama had occurred, haha In other news, I'm still considering getting a frog but taking my time about it. I might acquire the equipment over the course of the summer and do it that way. I've got the terrarium I would l
